Croatia turns back Chinese immigrants over SARS

ZAGREB, April 26 (Reuters) - Croatia has refused to allow a group of Chinese immigrants deported from Slovenia to cross the border because two of them had symptoms of the deadly SARS virus, Croatian state media said on Saturday.

The group of eight illegal immigrants had crossed into Slovenia from Croatia. They were being returned to Croatian territory when border guards found that two had fever, one of the symptoms of SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

"Since the illegal Chinese immigrants arrived at our border crossing on the fifth day after leaving Beijing, or during the incubation period, we carried out the security measure of measuring their body temperature," border inspector Branka Butorac was quoted as saying by the state news agency Hina.

"The Chinese will be kept in Slovenia until the end of the 14-day incubation period."

China and Hong Kong account for most of the 290 deaths worldwide from the flu-like disease and a majority of the thousands of infections. Croatia has not reported any SARS cases.

If the immigrants do not develop SARS after the incubation period Croatia will admit them across the border and then deport them to Bosnia where they arrived by plane.
