Boy, 3, killed after wandering off

A 3-year-old boy was struck and killed by an automobile Thursday afternoon on NW 23rd between Rockwell and Council after wandering off from his apartment complex, police said.

The child, Nicholas Reyes, was struck about 12:30 p.m. and taken by air ambulance to University hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:10 p.m.

The boy's parents told police the child had a habit of wandering the apartment complex. The accident took place nearly two blocks away from the family's apartment.

Neighbors and family friends said they realized the child was missing and had begun looking for him when they discovered there had been an accident.

The boy is the third child struck by a car in Oklahoma City in as many days.

Charge those parents with child abuse and neglect IMO! You don't let a 3-year old wander around an apartment complex! Stupid people!

That's a habit my son tried to develop when he was 2. When I determined that I wasn't going to be able to prevent him from unlocking the front door, because he was too clever for the hardware, I made arrangements with a neighbor. I waited. My son made his escape. The neighbor, a hulking BIG guy my kid was afraid of because he had a booming voice, came out, picked him up, held him at eye level and told him "NO! You do not leave your house without your mother or father!" then whapped him up once on the butt, set him down hard, and told him sternly to get his butt home! My son came home (safe under my neighbor's watchful eye) and never played that game again. I was on bedrest pregnant and due any day with the second one. I didn't have the ability to chase the boy, so I needed to worldproof the KID, since I couldn't babyproof the world. This made a huge impression on him!

You don't always get a second chance to learn some lessons the hard way. It's called parenting--trying to keep the little wretches from killing themselves. I don't usually blame the parents but the key here is "habit of." A kid can't develop a habit of doing something unless you let him.

Almost happened to the child of a friend-of-a-friend . . . FOAF (the dumbest beotch I've ever had the displeasure to know) decided to take a nap without locking the apartment door, and her three-year-old wandered into the middle of Bellaire (a VERY busy street here in H-town). Fortunately for him, but not for Mama, the complex security guard found him and brought him home, and spotted some, er, paraphernalia once inside the place . . . sigh.

Why? What's the big deal? He's wandered off before and nothing ever happened...

Parenting is constant and you have to be willing to do what is necessary for their own good. You have to be more determined than they are. If you don't discipline them, the world will. Down the road, the discipline gets tougher and the consequences more severe. It may not seem like it, but discipline will be met. My congratulations to you on being a good parent.

So? Didn't Hillary say it takes an apartment complex to raise a child?

Hmm, should that not read: "The boy's parents told the police that they had a habit of letting the child wander the apartment complex and nearby streets"?

Probably to sue the person who hit the child.

(Do I have faith in our justice system or what?!)

About 15 years ago, a three year old boy in my apartment complex drowned in the pool while his mother was in the house not paying attention. The sad thing was that it was the SECOND time he had fallen in the pool, the first time someone jsut happened to see him. DCS tried to get my next door neighbor to testify so they could bring up charges against the mother. She refused explaining that DCS had been called several times about the lack of supervision and since they had done nothing to keep the child alive, she would be damned if she helped put the mother in jail so that the DCS could hide it's culpability.

Oh my...that poor child. I have a 3 year old boy and 4 year old girl. We live in a 3 story townhouse, with our bedroom on the 3rd floor and theirs on the second. I went out and bought extra door locks to put on the door when I noticed they could easily unlock the front door, in case they ever tried to walk out of the apartment unnoticed. I know my two would try it. This mother obviously did not care enough about her child to try to keep him from wandering out.

I am paranoid to the hilt when it comes to their safety. Even when we're outside playing, I do not let either one of them get out of my sight...which is kinda hard because they always seem to run in the opposite direction of each other! LOL! However, I noticed some other parents in the neighborhood let their children play outside unsupervised and a few of them are my children's ages, so I end up watching them too sometimes. My best friend was over here with her little boy and noticed the lack of supervision too. And people drive like maniacs through the complex. I just don't understand it!!!

Probably what the parents were thinking too. That kind of thinking runs along the lines of "Hey, my kids haven't died in car accidents yet so what's the harm of not putting them in seat belts?" Or perhaps "My daughers havent been abducted and sexually abused yet so what's wrong with them being around homeless weirdos?"
