"The Hideout" By Peg Kehret (The Following is from Amazon.com)

Book Description

"He thought he could escape the nightmare

In a moment of madness, Jeremy Holland's parents were killed by a gunman in a Seattle mall. Now, as he sat in the train hurtling toward Chicago and a new life with his rich Uncle Ed, he could barely believe the terrible truth. He had no mother, no father, no home. Suddenly the impossible happened -- again -- as the train crashed in a blaze of fire, twisted metal, and screaming people. Jeremy staggered off, wandering aimlessly. All he could remember was the old man he tried to help. Then he found a deserted cabin, which seemed to be just waiting for him. He thought he could escape from Uncle Ed's pretentious lifestyle to a life of his own. Then he heard gunshots in the night and knew there could be no turning back... "

My nephew is in fourth grade and checked this book out of his school library. The cover of the book shows a boy sitting cross-legged near a cabin with woods and a bear in the background; obviously attractive to a ten year old reader. Well, what the above "Book Description" doesn't tell readers (or their parents) is that Jeremy's parents are gunned down by a "gun fanatic" who is angry at the government. The kid goes to live with his Uncle and befriends a bear who is killed by hunters. In the back of the book, the child reader is asked to sign a pledge AGAINST guns and hunting. This book is supposedly for 4th-6th graders. I don't know about Ms. Kehret's other books, but if they are anything like this one, parents should keep an eye out for them.

An unlikely plot, actually... blathering on about gun-toting extremists, and then describing a "friendship" with a bear? Wow... how can those two things, co-exist? Assuming that a child is savvy enough to form an opinion about gun control, how could they also then be so dimwitted about "friendly" bears in the woods? The Michigan militia and Yogi Bear in the same story! YUCK!

So, just in case kids don't have enough to be afraid of, this book gets published.

Has any one here actually read one of the Horatio Alger books? Now these are conservative books that children should read? If you do a serve the whole books are on the internet.

You really have to watch what your kid reads on his own, what they are assigned to read (check out the PABBIS website (Parents Against Bad Books in School), and what the teacher reads to the class.

I can see a teacher with an anti-gun agenda reading this book to the class and assigning the kids the job of signing the pledge or writing to their state legislators in favor of gun control. It's a form of brainwashing.

Parents really don't know what goes on in their kids' classrooms today.

There are a lot of books out there like this. "Heather has two Mommies" was notable for being totally blatant. But many other books teach bad lessons in fairly subtle ways.

The book "Rainbow Fish" is probably available in every School Library in the country. It tells the story of a beautiful fish who is shunned because he has colored scales. He is not treated well until he redistributes his wealth -- by ripping off his scales and sticking one on every other fish in the school. That way, all the fish are at the same level. It's the moral choice.

You are obviously too old to have young kids in school.

Maybe this is a sign that some of our FReepers should get into writing children's books with themes LIKE patriotism, etc. The Guild?

"the child reader is asked to sign a pledge AGAINST guns and hunting.

That's a pledge this 10 year old will never sign. She can't wait until she's 12 and can actually hunt opposed to just tagging along with her father. Loves wild game for dinner, mmmm mmmm.

Parental guidance will overcome the liberal views children pick up in the schools.

I fought this battle before over a not particularly well written book assigned to 4th graders. I won.

The home schooling community has access to many books that glorify true Patriotism and Christian values. The trick is not getting the books written, the trick is getting those books into government schools. As it is, the books will not come to most of the children in the US -- the children have to come to the books (by home schooling).

I wrote a couple of books. One book, "Children of the Rapture", is in the re-editing stages now.
I have to say this. The books out there for kids today are so sad. Harry Potter, for instance, is bad literature run amuck. This new book that we speak of, is just one more example of the liberal pukaganda that kids in public schools must endure.
HItler once said, "Give the the youth and I will rule the world", or something like that. Since the dems secretly love Hitler, this seems to be their agenda.
Maybe there should be a childrens book out that explains to them that guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I just wonder how many kids will be given the assignment to write a report about all the weapons in their own homes, owned by parents.....food for thought.

It absolutely is! These extreme left wing (statewide) curricula are drafted by some very evil people in Sacramento.

I enjoyed the Rainbow Fish book when I read it to my kids. But looking back, It would have been better if he gave up his scales freely. Just to spread the beauty around. The peer pressure motivation does give the impression that he really didn't want to do it.

Another example is The Grouchy Lady Bug. The kind and sharing lady bug comes in from the left. The lady bug that always wants to fight comes in from the right.
