Beijing Prevents SARS from Spreading Overseas

Outbound passengers in Beijing are now obliged to fill in a health report declaring whether or not they are infected with SARS, quarantine officials said Tuesday.

Quarantine authorities in Beijing said the move was designed toprevent SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) from spreading overseas.

The passengers may go ahead with their exit procedures after confirming they are free of the symptoms of SARS, or they will be asked to cancel their travel plans for immediate medical treatment.

Three automatic devices capable of detecting suspected SARS sufferers have been installed at Beijing's Capital Airport in a bid to curb the spread of the illness.

The quarantine authorities also ordered disinfection measures for all passenger aircraft from countries or regions hit by the disease and outbound passenger aircraft.

Passengers from those countries and regions are also obliged tofill in a health card before landing at the airport in a bid to screen out possible passengers infected by SARS.

I have my doubts about the veracity of this statement. Where is Bagdhad Bob when you need him to clarify something?

The only device I heard about was an infrared one designed to detect elevated body temperatures.

Most viruses incubate for a period of time after initial infection, so these 'devices' would miss a lot of infected people who show no symptoms.

I question, too, the reliance on the passengers to truthfully fill in those questionnaires.

That title is word for word from The People's Daily. Kinda misleading, isn't it. Who do they think they are kidding? Either the translator did a lousy job, or they think the headline will fool people into thinking that China has controlled the problem.

NOT!

You've bought a ticket. You have your passport. You've made it to the airport.

Now, they're going to ask you whether you have SARS, or whether you've let a terrorist pack your luggage.

I feel so much safer knowing they're asking this.

man, I laugh everytime I read one of their articles. The sad thing is that they basically spew the same BS in the Chinese version, only it's a little worse.

Somebody on FR told me the People's Daily was more reliable than The Wall Street Journal. He was serious, too. Used it to "prove" SARS was on the wane in China.

The Airline-Cabin Attendants Union is asleep at
the switch. The union needs to insist that the
Airline provide respirators to union members,
so that the attendants are
protected fron diseased passengers.
They cabin clean-up crew also needs to be protected.

My hypothesis is that people like that actually work for the PRC.

Systems of transliteration differ. I learned a couple of them, so my transliteration of Chinese is now all mixed up.

It could be just me...however, I noticed on a clip from MSNBC that while the Chinese Medical Techs. were taking ear temps. from passing travelers, they were not using disposable ear pieces? Is that a problem?

*note: if you want on or off my SARS update list...please let me know.

"non-disposable ear pieces a problem"?

Probably, since it can live on non human surfaces for 24 hours or so.
