WHO'S to blame for the destruction of Iraqi museums, libraries and archives, amounting to what The New York Times calls "one of the greatest cultural disasters in recent Middle Eastern history"? The Bush administration, say academic specialists on the Middle East. They proceed to compare American leaders to some of the worst mass-murderers in history.

Gee no wonder CAIR doesn't like this man, calls him as he sees them.

It is god's will that the iragi's destroy the things that showed they were civlized.

...but the Koran preaches gentility, right?

So how is ANY retired 4-star going to establish a rule of law which the Iraqis will follow?

Don't buy it as a generic Iraqi problem. My bet is it was an inside loot job by certain Baathists on their way out of power a la some of the ranking Nazis at the end of WWII.

Funny how quick they were to criticize the US military for not stopping the looting, never did hear anyone criticize the looters for being so uncivilized......... it's about time someone put the record straight.

The Kuwaiti scholar Shafiq N. Ghabra expanded on this theme in 2001 in the Middle East Quarterly.  Noting Iraq's uneasy mix of Arabs and Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites, urbanites and tribal members, plus other divisions, he noted how unmanageable governments found this diversity, which led them to create "a state devoid of political compromise."
I pray that the Iraqis have learned a thing or two and will resist the urge to return to their old ways before their elections.

Another fine job by Daniel Pipes; thank you LNM! for the ping.
