Two U.S. Soldiers Die in Baghdad Grenade Accident
Mon April 14, 2003 02:07 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Two U.S. soldiers were killed and two wounded in a grenade accident at a checkpoint south of Baghdad on Monday, military officials said.
"We're not sure how it happened but there was some kind of an accident with a grenade. Two guys were killed and two wounded," a senior officer said.
The soldiers were part of the Air Defense Artillery unit manning the Avenger anti-aircraft stinger systems mounted on Humvees.
Because there is no longer an air threat from Iraq, U.S. forces have begun to use the stingers at roadblocks.

We must keep these soldiers and their families in our prayers.

Aargh! Our casualties in this war would be halved if there were no accidents!
It's upsetting to lose such brave soldiers in avoidable accidents.

We actually had a couple guys get caught playing hackey-sack with a grenade at a 29 Palms Combined Arms Exercise (CAX).

It sure is.
We need to keep our men and women in our prayers so the Lord will look after them and keep them safe.
To: Poohbah
They were playing with a live grenade??

Pin was in, but the safety clip on the spoon had fallen off.
Yes, it was a green one, not a blue one. :o)

Hi mom!
To: Poohbah
They were idiots then.
They deserved punishment. Were they disciplined over it?
To: Unwavering Conservative
Yes, they were disciplined--30 days forfeiture of pay and allowances, 30 days confinement to quarters.
We were just shaking our heads in amazement when that bit of news got passed at the morning formation.

Sounds like it, you would be surprised what troops play with when bored.

To: Poohbah
They deserved that punishment.
To: dts32041
Well, they can just stay bored.
It is better to be bored than be doing unsafe.

Field Grade Article 15 or Court-Martial?
To: RetiredArmy
IIRC, the Squadron Commanding Officer Article 15'd them.

Wow!! One would think those that deal with weaponry all the time would have the most respect for it. Maybe a game of Russian roulette?

Actually, it was a couple of 'tron chasers (Aviation Electricians) from a Harrier squadron. They only fired about 100 rounds a year for their annual rifle quals.

I was a mid at Camp Pendleton playing Marine for a week in the 70s. We spent a day at "combat town" shooting blanks. First we had some instruction in bleachers, about 100 or so of us. A USMC LT and SGT gave a quick course in grenades, starting with how to tell the live (green) ones from the blue (practice) ones.
The LT picked up the green one without looking at it from a table andsaid "When you are handling these practice grenades...." and pulled out the pin.
The Sgt jumped over and screamed "LT! You have a live grenade there!!" and grabbed for it.
The live pinless grenade was dropped between them in the confusion and scuffle.
BOOM!
Right in front of 100 + college midshipmen.
Man, the lower rows did the 100 yard dash in 6 seconds. I was up top and just hunched down, lotta meat between me and the explosion.
Of course, it was a blue grenade painted green as a "joke". All the USMC cadres were laughing their asses off to see all the college boys $#!+ their pants. They do it for every group. What a bunch of kidders.
