Arcata, that tiny North Coast bastion of the robustly liberal, has quietly made itself the first city in the nation to outlaw voluntary compliance with the USA Patriot Act.

Town leaders know their new law outlawing the bigger law is probably illegal. And they don't know anyone local who's had troubles because of the Patriot Act.Arcata, that tiny North Coast bastion of the robustly liberal, has quietly made itself the first city in the nation to outlaw voluntary compliance with the USA Patriot Act.

Hmmm. The S.F. Chronicle, Arcata, Humbolt Gold, Anti-Bush, Anti-war, Anti-Patriot Act ... This is the Greens-Libertarian cabal!

All I know is the California maxim that I learned the hard way so many years ago:

"As Arcata goes,
. . . so goes Eureka."

Good for them! As unconstitutional as their law is, it's no more unconstitutional than most of the Patriot Act.

Ah, the Patriot act. Nothing like taking away freedoms under a PC feel-good name.

This is what happens to a nice little town when college students get to vote in local elections. The property owners frown on this BS but are out numbered...

Brian Willson, the national peace protester who lost his legs trying to block a Concord munitions train in 1987, lives in Arcata and helped draft the law.

Anyone stupid enough to sit in front of a moving train and not get out of the way in time, is stupid enough to help draft the law.

Not with out a furious fight.

LOL - I knew I'd catch at least one you out there.

I don't live anywhere near you, but I have a very good friend who does. I don't need to tell you what you're up against.

Give em hell for me.

These people appear to me to be part of the "hippie" generation who have never grown up!! Sorry, I'm not buying their whiney stuff!

Your right to privacy does not include the government NOT KNOWING YOU ARE HERE! That is a stupid assumption.

Which freedoms? The freedom to commit treason? Who is being prevented from committing treason?

Also, it isn't just about committing treason. It's about ordinary Americans like you and me being spied upon by the government, directly contradicting the 4th Amendment (unlawful search and seizure).

Don't subscribe to the Jihadi Digest, or check out a book on bomb-making or anthrax growing from the library, and you'll be okay.

I'm prepping to move on out of Eureka and hit the central coast; been here two good years, but these hippies make me want to puke, especially during a time of comflict.

I don't want to see the Patriot act any more than I want the Income Tax, which is not at all. I live in *Pennsylvania*. Not New Jersey, not Delaware, and sure as hell not Washington, DC. The Federal government is supposed to act as my state's agent in matters international, issue currency, and coordinate my state's actions with the other states. Knowing what books I read, where I spend my money, how much I make, and where I made it aren't part of those things. If people are so worried about terrorism, we should be pushing the government to lock down our borders and ports of entry. We're supposed to be the land of the free, people.
