One of the reasons for our war with Iraq and having it work well was to accomplish the goal of bringing Iran back into the civilized world through the decisions of the Iranian people. If they do it on their own it will be much better for everyone than if we try to conquer them. A large portion of the Iranian people would like closer ties with the west and our military success can demonstrate that Iran can gain nothing through war. Our willingness to allow the Iraqi people to establish their own government and benefit from their trade with the U.S. can show that Iran also has something to gain from trading with us.

Iran's leaders are in a heated debate over how to deal with the U.S. success in shattering Saddam Hussein's regime in neighboring Iraq. Many fear Iran - listed with Iraq and North Korea as part of President George W. Bush's "axis of evil" - could be next on America's target list.
