My theory is, and has been for a long time, dating even to the Yeltsin era, is that Russia foreign policy is not as simple as us v. them, as black and white as that. A large camp in Russia, signified by the STRONG objections, possibly the strongest objection of any, of the Foreign Minister Ivanov to the Coalition at the UN. Putin, though his hands may not be entirely clean, signifies the camp that knows all of this, knows it is unwise, but cannot (or knows it is unsafe to) do anything against it. Match the public stances of Putin vs Ivanov, you will see what I mean.
