Adel Darwish, an author who has written extensively about the Middle East, said it is crucial either to find Mr. Hussein's body, if he is dead, or to capture him and put him on trial so that his crimes would be revealed in an open court. Only then, Mr. Darwish said, would Arabs sympathetic to Mr. Hussein understand the barbarity of his regime.
"It's very important to his legacy because that would demystify him," Mr. Darwish said, describing Mr. Hussein as one of the world's last Soviet-style rulers.
I agree with Mr. Darwish to a point. It IS critical to find Saddam's corpse or at least some pieces for DNA testing.
However, after that, the gentleman and I part company. For a multitude of reasons, I would not care to see the cunning Mr. O. J. Saddam on the stand in a protracted trial.
I personally believe he's dead. I look forward to war crimes trials for his top lieutenants and any remaining sons.
If the Butcher's body or spare parts can't be found, my preference is that he be tried in absentia on world-wide TV. His horrors could then be exposed by witnesses for all doubters to see.
