On now. Does this say anything about letting the Syrians off the hook?

We have no plans to throw missiles into Syria at this point.

They would have to go back to congress get permission to attack Syria. Besides that leave 2-3 carriers there.

Compared to Iraq, Syria's army could be whipped by the Dallas Police Department.

I don't get this bit about Syria. It would be the height of blunder to immediately begin saber-rattling with Syria. The Arab world--and pretty much everyone else who hates America--would LOVE to get the chance to "prove" that we're in the Middle East to attack one country after another.

We have a long period of tough diplomatic negotiation with Assad's regime before we have to worry about aircraft carrier battle groups sailing off his shore. In the meantime, we have a lot of sailors, marines and Aviators that need a break, and to see their families.

It may be that with the fall of Saddam, Assad and his ilk see the writing on the wall. Let's see how things shake out in the aftermath. I suspect the next year or so has some interesting changes in store for that part of the world.

I'm not sanguine about the prospect of "selling" the diplomatic community on the idea of knocking out Assad either.

But the fact is Syria has been providing arms to Iraq while we were engaged in hostilities with that country, has sent suicide bombers across the border to interfere with our operations and to murder us, and is even now harboring much of Iraq's leadership.

What ever happened to "You're either with us or against us?"

And are we going to do anything about it?

These units have been out there for a long time. It's time to refitt and ready for whatever their next engagement will be.

The US has the whole rest of the year to apply pressure. Let the guys on the carriers go home and get some R&R.
