British peace activist shot in Gaza Strip (UPDATE)

IDF troops shot a British peace activist working as a human shield with the International Solidarity Movement on Friday, witnesses said.

The man was reportedly standing in between Israeli troops and a group of Palestinian children when soldiers opened fire, said Khalil Abdullah, an activist with the pro-Palestinian group.

The IDF had no immediate comment.

"A group of ISM people were trying to set up a small protest tent alongside a road used by the army. The soldiers opened fire," said Abdullah who witnessed the shooting.

The 24-year-old British activist was trying to help two children who were trapped in a crossfire when the Briton was shot in the head. Doctors at a hospital in Rafah where the activists were said he was declared brain dead.

Rachel Corrie, 23, of Olympia, Washington, another activist working with the International Solidarity Movement, was killed last month in Rafah when an IDF D-9 bulldozer ran her over. She was trying to stop the razing of a building in the Rafah refugee camp. The group claimed the bulldozer ran over her and then backed up. The army denied the claim and said the bulldozer operator did not see her.

Last week, another American activist with the group - Brian Avery - was shot in the West Bank city of Jenin.
