N.Y. Family Watched As Marine Hung Flag

.c The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - The world watched Wednesday as a Marine corporal clambered up a statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad and covered its face with an American flag just before the monument was pulled down and torn to pieces by cheering Iraqis.

Also looking on raptly was Cpl. Edward Chin's family in New York.

``I thought, 'Oh, my son, you are making history, you are part of the Iraqis' liberation,'' his father, Stanley Chin, said after watching the image of his son broadcast on television all over the world.

Shortly after wrapping the flag around the towering Saddam's face, military officials - highly conscious of anything that could be interpreted as a sign of American occupation - ordered Chin, 23, to take it down. He then replaced it with an Iraqi flag.

His fiancee, Anne Fu, said she knew Chin meant no disrespect.

``He wanted to show the Iraqi people that they were free, that they were liberated, that the U.S. was there to help them and that Saddam is over,'' she said outside the family's home.

Chin and his family are ethnic Chinese from Myanmar, formerly Burma. They moved to the United States when Chin was 1 week old and live in Brooklyn. He joined the Marines in 1999 and is stationed at the Marine Corps Air/Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

His family said they had not seen him since before Christmas before they glimpsed him on television.

``I'm very proud of him,'' his sister Connie Chin told WWOR-TV. ``Here's a 23-year-old doing all these amazing things and representing America and representing it well, I think.''

What an amazing life moment that must have been for that soldier. Awesome. And for his family to have watched it, live. What a thrill.

Check out this about that flag from a London Times post... it was from the Pentagon September 11!

Lieutenant McLaughlin had with him a Stars and Stripes that he had been given at the Pentagon that fateful day. In Baghdad’s Paradise Square, he handed the flag to Corporal Edward Chin, who climbed a giant statue of Saddam and draped it over the deposed dictator’s head.

God bless him and God bless all our soldiers, whether they are homegrown or delivered from oppressive regimes such as Burma. His origin makes the victory on behalf of the Iraqi people today that much sweeter.

That family should be proud! I loved it when he hung that American flag on Saddams ugly face! The best part was the horror of the newsreaders on NBC's reaction to that! LOL!

John, on one of the three cable networks (I think CNN) I saw a Brit reporter on the scene interview this guy before the statue, just by coincidence. He was in his vehicle, and had a helmet with "CHIN" inked on the front.

You know, I hate to be so cynical, but I work in a university environment and I can't help it: I just can't WAIT till some leftie twit remarks upon that moment and tries linking it to white hegemony. I will throw Chin in her Face faster than you can say "lying in wait."

Wow that gives me a good chill, This story needs more exposure! Someone needs to advise Rush about this.

The pencil pushers back at the pentagon are looking at this guy and saying "Oh my God look at that Marine! He doesn't have a safety harness on! Get me his commanding officer right now."
