General and ally of former Yugoslav president arrested in investigation of premier's killing

A former army intelligence chief and another ally of former Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica have been arrested for last month's assassination of Serbia's prime minister, the government said Wednesday.

Aco Tomic, who headed the Yugoslav army intelligence service until last month, and Kostunica's former security adviser, Rade Bulatovic, were arrested late Tuesday for alleged contacts with a criminal gang suspected of organizing the assassination of Zoran Djindjic on March 12.

Is it only a matter of time before they arrest Kostunica? I think this is Operation Use-Djindjic's-murder-to-remove-all-rivals.

Not to change the subject, but...

"The tragedy of Djindjic's assassination and the state of emergency are being used for a crackdown against political opponents," Kostunica said. "Can you imagine anyone in America blaming the Republicans for (John F.) Kennedy's assassination?"

Well, yes! Shortly after the assassination of JFK, Earl Warren, Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court came on TV and said, "We know who killed JFK!"

My thoughts that, "Great, they've caught the shooter" quickly were dashed when Warren continued on, "It's one of those right wing nuts!"

I could not believe that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court would utter such and inflammatory statement at a time like that! I was all but spit on by democrats on campus that knew I was a consetvative Republican!

Stalin's technique was to have a rival killed, and then use the accusation of being involved in the killing to remove other rivals. He famously used this technique in the Great Purge. I'm reading a new book about how he tried to use the same technique in his last years, 1948-53, Stalin's Last Crime.
