Russian Co. Denies Selling Iraq Goggles
.c The Associated Press
MOSCOW (AP) - A Russian factory that manufactured night-vision goggles, which had been found in Iraq by the U.S. forces, denied shipping the equipment to Baghdad, a news agency reported Monday.
The Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory near Moscow would have needed the Defense Ministry's permission to sell any of its products to Iraq, its technical director Viktor Rumyantsev said Monday, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency. He said it had not received such permission.
Rumyantsev said that the goggles found in Iraq were readily available in hunting stores throughout Russia. He asserted that the goggles were considered too primitive for military use, having a range of just 70 meters (77 yards) compared to a minimum of 120 meters (131 yards) for similar devices used by the military, ITAR-Tass reported.
With U.S.-Russian ties badly damaged by disagreements over the war in Iraq, Washington has accused Russian companies of providing Iraq with anti-tank guided missiles, night-vision goggles and satellite jamming devices, perhaps through a third country, in violation of U.N. sanctions.
Russia has vehemently denied the allegations, which Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov denounced as an ``information war'' against Moscow.

Maybe they didn't ship them to Baghdad. Maybe they shipped them to Damascus and then Syria shipped them to Baghdad. What's the difference? Using third parties to hide their complicity is nothing new. The point is that illegal weapons of Russina Manufacture are there so Russia is guilty until proven innocent.

Named were Aviaconversiya, accused of selling and helping to deploy GPS jamming devices, KBP Tula, accused of selling Kornet antitank missiles, and an unidentified company accused of selling night vision goggles. According to the Washington Post, the Russian government had been given detailed information, such as names, addresses, ports and shipping dates but failed to stop the sales. The Russian government has denied the allegations. Also in March, U.S. Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld was quoted as saying that Syria had also shipped night vision equipment to Iraq, although it was unclear if the equipment was Russian or Syrian in origin. And also in March, charges were filed in Germany against two Germans accused of trying to sell Iraq components for missile guidance in violation of the U.N. embargo and German export control laws.

Won't this be fun when the DIA,CIA, and FBI accounting teams get through reading all of the books in Iraq? I'll bet we find out a lot about our Russian, French and German "friends".
