Some years ago I read an account of the attack on the USS Liberty, supposedly accidental but it certainly seemed to be deliberate from the description. It was an electronic intelligence gatherer and supposedly the Israelis didn't want it listening to their traffic during the war....

I heard it was relaying information that was getting intercepted by the Soviets and fed to the Arabs.
