Green Party Leader to Suicide Bombing Advocates: "Ithaca is Against the War" (Ithaca Alert)
Paul Glover - Green Party of Ithaca

Posted on 04/05/2003 10:17:42 AM PST by governsleastgovernsbest

Paul Glover, a leader of Ithaca's Green Party, in the course of calling for Ithaca to declare a "Franco-Ithacan Friendship Day", has called for a message to be sent to Moroccan demonstrators calling for suicide bombing letting them know that "Ithaca is against the war."

Here is the text of the Green Party leader's message, posted to the list serve of the anti-war group "Ithaca Sharks':

Subj: [Ithaca Sharks] Ithaca FrenchFest

Date: 4/4/03 9:07:09 PM Eastern Standard Time

Bonjour!

I’ve gotten tired of standing around with candles singing peace songs, looking sad at my sneakers, and want to have fun while sending an antiwar message.

The Ithaca FrenchFest is organizing 4/9 at 6pm at Autumn Leaves.

We’ll invite Francophone media and celebrities, to send an antiwar message by celebrating French culture, wine and foreign policy, and french fries, on the Commons 4/30. Inside Autumn Leaves in case of rain.

Already have significant donation of French wine. Need more for a toast.

Looking for help creating media contact list (there are a lot headquartered in NYC), inviting French movie stars & notables (I know former first lady Danielle Mitterrand), local French-speakers & francophiles, putting together French food, finding French musicians, chanteurs (French antiwar songs?) and dancers, people to be media contacts, what else?

150,000 Moroccans (French-speaking) marched last week chanting “Suicide bombing is the path to liberation.” We want to make sure they know Ithaca is against the war.

Here’s a draft PROCLAMATION to be signed by the mayor:

”WHEREAS Ithacans highly regard French literature, music, painting, food and wine, and

WHEREAS the Statue of Liberty, donated by the people of France, has for 117 years reminded the people of the United States of our high regard for the Rights of Man, and,

WHEREAS the current government of France has recently provided principled leadership in the United Nations to encourage restraint by the United States in foreign relations, and,

WHEREAS the City of Ithaca has led 161 other U.S. cities in petitioning the government of the United States for the same restraint,

THEREFORE be it resolved that April 30, 2003 shall be celebrated as Franco-Ithacan Friendship Day in the City of Ithaca, New York. Salut!

Got a friend that graduated from Cornell who is from a conservative family. Anything Ithaca she's interested in. Thought this might interest her. Emailed her a copy.

When 150,000 people call for suicide bombings, does this "peace activist" condemn them? No, he just wants them to know that he too opposes the war, and apparently even wants them included in the "Franco-Ithacan" friendship declaration.

Doesn't speak well for American education. I guess a course of elementary Logic wasn't included in his curriculum. Here is a man staking his life for "peace" but at the same time applauding those who "kill for peace." Perhaps "Green" peace is a secret code for Marxist revolution.

Well, I suppose it makes sense that a guy who tells homocide bombers not to attack his city because it's against the war would simultaneously suck up to France.

Note that the guy stresses that the Moroccans are "French-speaking." So he apparently would want the "Franco-Ithacan Friendship Proclamation" to apply to them.

He is effectively expressing friendship and solidarity for advocates of suicide bombing.

unless those men are Iraqi or Israeli citizens, then we support efforts to torture them or to blow up bombs on their buses.

But not, obviously, against 15,000 suicide bombers.

Exactly. The hypocrisy of this "peace activist" is stunning.

You would have thought the message would have been: "Violence is wrong. Find a peaceful means to acheive your goals."

But no, the message is "Don't bomb us. We agree with your anti-war stance. And for that matter, here's a nice Franco-Ithacan Proclamation expressing our friendship for you."

Plenty ought to be available, and at bargain-basement prices too.

I have some bad news for the morons in bed with the terrorists. The Islamakazi types not only don't respect cowardly people, they exploit weakness. Cowering in the corner saying "please don't kill me, i'm on your side" gives them all kinds of joy. This means they can take you out anytime they want. They have been known to attack their faithful allies for not supporting them enough. All this sucking up to the terrorist does is make you an easier target for them. To the terrorist enablers I say "good luck with your wish to die on your knees. I just hope you don't take any good people or our country down with you."

Here in the real world ( mostly lib free ) , we're buying more ammo.

The attempt by these citizens of Ithaca to make sure that they are not victimized by suicide bombers through efforts to inform the suicide bombers that they don't like war reminded me of a bit from the Simpsons. (Recounted by Jonah Goldberg in NRO discussing how impatient journalists were in writing about the war on terror.)
One of my favorite scenes in The Simpsons (as longtime readers know) is when Homer is selected to join a space-shuttle mission. News anchor Kent Brockman is scheduled to interview the shuttle crew while Homer and the rest of the crew are in orbit. But just before they "switch live" to the craft, there's a mishap on board. Homer, unaccustomed to weightlessness, has smashed an ant farm they brought with them. When Kent Brockman cuts to the live feed from the shuttle, the garden-variety ants float by the TV-camera lens — momentarily appearing gigantic. Then, they lose the picture.

Brockman, like so many TV newsmen, responds instantly with his gut impressions: "Ladies and gentlemen, er, we've just lost the picture, but, uh, what we've seen speaks for itself. The Corvair spacecraft has been taken over — 'conquered', if you will — by a master race of giant space ants. It's difficult to tell from this vantage point whether they will consume the captive earthmen or merely enslave them. One thing is for certain, there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to... toil in their underground sugar caves."

LOL.

On a somber note, that newsman was in the great French tradition, who obligingly rounded up tens of thousands of their Jewish compatriots and handed them to the Nazis who murdered most of them in concentration camps.
