Be glad you don't live in Philadelphia. Their disciplinary code is 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, inside of school or out.

It's being challenged in court.

I am very thankful that my kids are out of school. I fought many school wars with the dumbing down mess. I wish the good guys well in the court case. When and if I ever have grandchildren, they'll not attend publik skoool!

I said 65 percent for all of DeSoto, but that is the Mansfield section only. Did you check, DJ, to see if the Confederates won at Mansfield? I could be wrong on that, for that is not something that I have read about in some time.

As I recall, DeSoto Parish voted for G.W. Bush in 2000; so it must have been votes cast along racial lines. It is hard to imagine many LA blacks voting for Bush, isn't it?

The Confederates won the day at Mansfield but were repelled at Pleasant Hill the next day and failed to finish off the Union forces. Thus you might call it a stalemate. In the meantime, the Red River was falling and threatened to strand the Naval component of the expedition.

The Union forces under Banks (Army) and Porter (Navy) withdres, failing in their goal of capturing Shreveport and separating Texas from the rest of the Confederacy.

Most historians contend that the entire expedition was militarily unnecessary and the Union troops would have been put to better use supporting the attack on Mobile.

Norther DeSoto Parish has experienced a lot of growth in recent years and has become a bedroom community of Shreveport. With that in mind I wouldn't venture a guess whether these were kids from the underclass, or were your typical unsupervised, undisciplined suburban types. Could be either.

Unfortunately for LA Blacks, yes. DeSoto very narrowly went for Dubya, 5,260 to 5,036. 4 years earlier, Clinton had beaten Dole there by an almost 2-to-1 margin.

A very poorly run and supervised one. Also, it's way too big at 5,000 students.

It's not all the school administration's fault, either. Nothing can destroy a good school faster than bad kids.

When my cousins were looking at public schools recently for their children (they decided to go private), they would stand across the street from the school and wait for the kids to come out. They would see how they were dressed and how they comported themselves. If they didn't like what they saw, they'd check out other schools. They wouldn't even bother to meet with school officials.

The kids are doing well, but their parents would still prefer to send them to a good public school. They believe in public education, unlike some of my relatives. They're paying through the nose for the public schools in taxes, and they feel the schools should be good.

As I recall, Nathaniel P. Banks was a most inept Union commander, right? I had completely forgotten about Pleasant Hill being the next day and it being a Union victory. None of the NW LA fighting had any impact on the outcome of the war; so it is not mentioned in basic history textbooks. I do recall visiting the Mansfield battlefield years ago with a cousin. There was very little there, but some preservation work has since been done at the site.

Seems like I've read that Banks wasn't the worst general the Union had, but he was far from the best. He was also a politician, and I seem to recall that he had Presidential aspirations. A successful Red River expedition may have been intended as a springboard toward that goal.

Part of the Mansfield battleground has been preserved, but much has not, and it adjoins a large open pit lignite mine. There's a bit of a controversy going on along the lines of historic preservation vs economic development.

On your other post about Ewing and Breaux. I haven't heard of Breaux endorsing anyone yet. I confess to having a personal reason for being partial to Ewing. I don't know him personally, but an uncle went to school with him and some of my cousins are good friends with his kids. I really can find little to dislike about him personally or politically.

That said, I still think the eventually winner will come from South Louisiana simply for geographic reasons.

That's because the incident in question occured at a skating rink. It did not occur under the eye of the school system and yet your comments focused on the school system. I didn't think your comments were connected to the facts presented in the article. But, to be fair, I'm not sure the article had a point.
