China Develops Artificial Bone with Nano Technology
Local doctors have treated 18 bone disease patients by implanting a new type of artificial bone developed by Chinese scientists with Nano technology.
A group of scientists, led by Professor Cui Fuzhai from Qinghua University, in Beijing, spent six years developing the man-made bone, dubbed the "Nano bone."
What makes the new technology different from traditional therapies is that the artificial structure planted in the human body disintegrates gradually over a period of time.
According to the experts, once the artificial bone is implanted, the human bone corpuscle grows and "scrambles" into the man-made biological structure. The bone-dissolving corpuscle then "consumes" the artificial bone, and the bone-forming corpuscle builds up the new human bone, step by step.
Eventually, the entire artificial implant is absorbed by the human body and replaced by human bone corpuscle.
The Nano-bone technology has obtained official approval for clinical testing, and it has been implanted in 18 patients in a military hospital in Beijing and a medical college in Jiangsu Province.
Annually, China has 250,000 patients who require bone repair following the removal of bone tumors. In the past, artificial bones were made of metal, ceramic materials and macromolecular materials.

Nanotech will be the new frontier. Lots of activity in this area.

I've heard of coral being used for this purpose too.

Now your teeth will be made in China too.

This is interesting. My husband has a bone tumor in the top of the femur.

One has to wonder how much of the information was stolen from the United States and other coutries"Stolen"? I'd say probably none. They might have learned a lot, certainly. But then, I haven't heard of anything like this out of the West; it's probably mostly home-grown, so to speak.
I'm not surprised if China is taking the lead in an area like this. Even a brutal communist dictatorship doesn't have regulations as draconian and byzantine as our FDA, which seems designed to stifle advances in medicine. In some (perhaps many) ways the Chinese are more free than we are.

Maybe they are doing forced bone marrow transplants....
To: Physicist
things of this nature have been done with cartilage here in the west. I sincerely doubt that this artificial bone is the result of true nanotech. materials tech, yes.

Bones, I tire of your cynicism. Do you not realize what this means? We are talking humanity here!
Now the Chinese Prisoners who work manufacturing stuff for Wal-Mart no longer need fear being made involuntary bone-donors if they fall behind their production schedule. O happy day!
Let's hope these CHICOM nano-docs move on to kidneys and other body parts, soon. It could mean cheaper consumer goods for millions of Americans. That is if the Americans have any money left after they lose the jobs they had making stuff for Wal-Mart.

You know, this sounds alot like what we use(d?) bits of coral for...when implanted into bones it performs in a similar way...if my memory of a show on the Discovery channel is correct. After a while one counldn't tell the real bone from the implanted coral.

After that they peobably won't be stopped until they reach Berlin and Vienna. Maybe they'll also do the world a favor and reduce Bagdad to rubble again.

Wow. Maybe they can eventually end the use of those awful metal rods that replace shattered bones.
