Gotta remember that the peanut farmer Jima Cahta "loaned" the soviets one our Cray super computers so they could update their auto factories. So of course the first thing that happened was a technological leap in soviet weapons and delivery systems. When Jima asked for them back Moscow said "NYET".

Kinda like saddam telling dan blather that he wouldn't torch the oil wells, but then only evil conservatives lie and cheat.

Well, the first half of the sentence is true: "No aircraft carrier or a bomber plane of the US army"

What If Iraqi Army Had Russian MiG-31 Jets?

Let me think about this for a second. I believe the US motto would be

Break ground and fly into the wind!

and the Iraqi would be something like

Break wind and fly into the gound!

;-)

When you sue up Colt company for someone misused thier produced gun then you create precendent for Russia. Not before. Show us good example sue Colt company first

Last time I checked, colt did not produce the AK-47 Assault Rifle, the preferred weapon of our enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired.

Who invented the AK-47 anyway?

Oh believe me it's happening just as you type. So far they have not been able too connect the manufactures close enough to get a guilty verdict that will stand up on appeal but they're still trying. One thing is that I not sure you under stand how guns are sold in this country. Manufacturer sells to distributor, distributor sells to dealer, each of which is licensed to do this, then dealer sells to general citizen. There have been a couple of the dealers that have been convicted or had civil cases decided against them.

The USA government has prevented transfers of weapons to some countries because of unauthorized transfers by those countries to others. Anyone that would then go ahead and sell/ship the proscribed weapons to those countries would be criminally liable. I do believe there have been a couple cases in which the seller was convicted

Personally I'm kind of pissed at both the Russian and USA governments. We have some of these weapons in our control, they should have identifying marks on them that can be traced. I'm wondering why this is being played the way it is. The Iraqis should not have had them under sanctions. The Russian government should be able to tell where they went. Did the USA ask the Russian government to trace them and get told no. Did the USA government just start saying that the Russians supplied them against the sanctions, without asking the Russians to trace them.

As far as I know the AK is not on the proscribed list. For that matter I would say they have AKs from a number of sources from what I've seen. 2 that stick in my mind that I've seen 1 looked like a Romanian, the other East German.

Who invented the AK-47 anyway?

Who invented the Avtomat Kalashnikov !!!??? Do you live in New York or something?

;-^)

They've got awful ergos (although Kalashnikov originally put the charging handle where it belongs, on the left), they aren't accurate (2-3 MOA) but damn are they reliable and cheap. A bazillion dead 3rd worlders can't be wrong.

from http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/history.html

In 1916 plans for a lightweight self-loading rifle were created by Vladimir Grigorevich Federov one of the Czar's arms designers. During this time many armies of the world were working on self-loading lightweight rifle projects following the introduction of the automatic pistol and machinegun. Federov's idea was to use low-powered rounds to minimize recoil and wear on the rifle. However only a few of Federov Automat's were created and used in WW I. By 1943 the USSR had adopted a cartridge designed by N.M. Elizarov and B. V.Semin. The new 7.62x39mm round was designated the m43. The new round had less power, was shorter, and rimless. Soon after the word went around to Soviet designers that a new self-loading rifle was needed for the new round. This eventually led to the birth of the AK-47.

The AK-47 replaced the Soviet rifle the SKS45 designed by Simonovs that was in use during W.W.II. The AK-47 was designed by Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov and had only the equivalent of a Russian high school degree. In 1938 Kalashnikov was drafted into the Soviet army. He became very interested in the operation of firearms and apparently a genius was awakened in him. In 1941 Kalashnikov was called to active duty and became a tank driver. He fought in the battle of Bryansk while the battle raged his tank was hit by a shell wounding Kalashnikov in the arm. During his hospital stay he studied all the firearms books he could get his hands on. Due to the seriousness of his would he was allowed to spend six months on leave in his home town of Alma-Ata. Kalashnikov spent his time designing a sub machine gun with his machinist friend Zhenya Kravchenko. In 1946 Kalashnikov sent off the drawling for a new gas operated rifle based on the m43 cartridge to the Main Artillery Commission in Moscow. The committee decided that his design had merit and gave him the go ahead to create several prototypes. From 1946-1948 work progressed on the Kalashnikov rifle, progress was slow with changes having to be made every step of the way. In 1949 one of Kalashnikovs rifles was accepted as the Soviet Army's AK-47 (Avtomat Kalashnikova Obrazets 1947) namely the AK-47 today. Kalashnikov then left the military and started work at a factory where he designed server different models of the AK-47 and other spin-offs of other machine guns.

The MiG-31 is a massive aircraft, over 50 tons fully loaded, and it has almost no close combat capability. It would have to rely on ground-based radar to avoid hostile fighters closing from outside its own radar's field of view. Its radar and missiles are said to be excellent, but how these would fare against state of the art active jamming is a matter of conjecture. The overall record of Russian radar in this area is not good. Even at mach 4.5, the long range R-33 missiles would require more than two minutes to travel the alleged 160km maximum range. At a more realistic 100 km, the transit time is still well over a minute. That is an eternity in air combat and especially to the processors that control our jammers. If an F-15 pops up out of the weeds close by, it's all over. Though it originated in the 1980s, the MiG-31 is conceptually a product of the 1950s. Its nearest western counterparts are probably the Avro CF-105 Arrow and the North American F-108 Rapier, both of which were cancelled in 1959, the latter without having ever flown.
