Emergency crews are rushing to the scene of a building collapse in Washington Heights, where 50 to 100 people may be trapped, according to initial reports.

The facade of a one-story commercial building at 708 West 177th Street collapsed just before noon Thursday.

Only one injury has been confirmed. That victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

There are also unconfirmed reports that dozens of people may be trapped inside, though not necassarily injured.

NY1 will post more information about this breaking story as soon as it becomes available.

Thanks.

Washington Heights is a mostly residential area of the city with many five story apartment buildings.

I certainly hope the roads for medical personnel are not blocked by the protestors.

This happens with alarming regularity in some of the older sections of Manhattan where building codes are sometimes...lax. I just hope there aren't any protestors laying their stupid little bodies in the way of any ambulances that are necessary.

Still waiting for more info. Usually these buildings are old and not kept up that well by the owners!

A one story building is not quite the same as a 21 story building. A few shovels and a wheelbarrow and the sidewalk will be clear to pedestrians in an hour.

Perhaps some of clintoon's too few Black American detractors lived in that building...

Yes, I am praying for the residents also. Meant to add that to my previous comment. Hope it didn't seem insensitive.

Are those old-style brownstones common in this area? I know firefighters absolutely detest these kind of buildings - they say deathtraps don't come any worse than these.
