I think it would be great fun to be a dolphin trainer, being the animal lover that I am. Though that's not the reason that the Navy trains dolphins, and that's a good thing because they dolphins are helping the Navy save lives.

I beg to differ! They were in front of me in line at the Marine Recruiters office. I was highly put out that they were accepted whereas I (Hillary Rodham Clinton) was denied as "unfit" for service.

Neither did the but I think the dolphins have got a much more glamorous job.

Anyone who has worked with dolphins will tell you that if they are unhappy, they will not work. So PETA should just shut their fool mouths.

Close tag.

I know some people's browsers aren't handling the "clear all" tag so whoops I noticed I didn't close my hyperlink tag in my post above.

"These are animals that, number one, have not volunteered to take part in this whatsoever. Number two, they are being put in harm's way...when they don't even know they are in harm's way," Boyles told CNSNews.com.

LOL, I was just waiting for this. I'm sure these activists care more about animals than people.

Sorry for the glibness of my facile response.

Yes, using animals to deliver violence, or putting sentient (pain-feeling) animals into great risk would be a different kind of ethical question. I guess PETA is against carnivorial heterotrophism (meat-eating) because they feel or reason that sentient animals have natural-law rights protecting the animals against assault.

But using the trained dolphins to locate the mines does not present a great risk to the animals, and they're not delivering violence. There's no evidence that the dolphins could make an informed choice about whether to "volunteer" for military service. The dolphins seem to cooperate a lot with humans, and they seem to make affirmative moral choices when they have rescued swimmers or mariners. But the dolphins are carnivores, which PETA would say is wrong.

Just because the dolphins did not "volunteer" does not mean that they are slaves; just because the dolphins are trained wild animals does not mean that they are free.

My Lab not only volunteered to leave her siblings, she flung herself on the feet of my children and started licking their knees (as high as she could reach at that time). We drafted a salmon for dinner, she drafted her usual AvoDerm Chicken & Rice, but she got tidbits of salmon as well.

As you can see, she's a very patriotic dog, and will serve her country gladly as soon as they need somebody who can lick faces, retrieve bumpers, and run agility courses . . . :-D

Dolphins and monkeys...one more critter and we might be able to convince Mudboy Slim to work up a new "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my" spoof song just for the PETA folks. {;^)

Thanks for the pic she's a beautiful being. Our Lab kind of volunteered also. She was the runt in a litter of eight. When we went to look at the puppies she came straight to me and bear hugged my ankle then began to dominate my foot. I always like the agressive type so it was instant bond. The bad thing was that she was only 4 weeks old at the time so we had to wait,(it was a long 2 weeks). Now we've had her 14 months. Does your Lab put her nose in the water bowl and blow bubbles out her nostrils? Crazy!

She doesn't blow bubbles in her water bowl - it's an automatic waterer so it's a little on the shallow side - but when we go to the river she likes to retrieve stones off the bottom, and she'll seriously blow bubbles while doing that . . . crazy dog.

Our girl was also the runt of her litter AND the Boss Dog. (We had to put her on a diet right away because she was taking the lion's share of 8 puppies' food!) I had my eye on a kinder, gentler black girl in the litter, but when she took to my kids so well I HAD to take her. If any other puppy came near the kids, she would shoulder them away and stand in between. She still does that for me if we meet another dog or people she doesn't like the looks of. She doesn't growl or bark, she simply takes up a position between me and the perceived threat and gives them "the look."

She has been a handful to train (a little wilful and bullheaded) but she's highly intelligent and intensely loyal and loving. She's still a little one - 21 1/2" at the shoulder and 41 pounds at two years.

Our Lula Belle is around 65 to 70 lbs. She is pretty obedient except on a leash. I could hitch her to a plow and do 20 acres a day easily. She loves the lake, the ocean, or her wading pool. When she was half the size she is now she showed me that she knew what was in the hot tub by lifting the cover with her nose and turning to look at me. I nearly wet my pants laughing. She loves all dogs, cats, people, and frogs (I think she thinks they are tiny hairless hopping dogs). She is also a Chocolate with a white blaze on her chest and a tiny white tip on her tail so she'll never be a show dog. She loves to go for a ride in the car or the boat. She is a nut in the purest sense and I swear she does things to get a laugh. We love her.

ooooo . . . hot tubs.

When our Shelley was a baby, maybe 6 months, she boarded for a couple of days at her obedience trainer's house. The very first day, she got the cover off the hot tub and jumped in . . . "none of the dogs have ever figured that out before" said the trainer. Of course, she has Boxers and thinks that Labs are dumb . . . who's dumb now? :-D

Now she has figured out how to "bounce" the gate to the back yard so that the latch comes open . . . she always goes two houses up the hill to visit with two hunting dogs, a Black and a Chocolate Lab, that live in an Invisible Fence. So when I find the gate open, I just blow my whistle and she comes trotting home with this smug look on her face.

Changing the latch to a spring-loaded version this weekend.

The bounce trick must be instinct in a Lab. Lula will act like a swirling dervish on hand command (you index finger down clockwise spin) and will reverse direction when you say "unwind girl". We think she may be a space alien studying human culture.
