WASHINGTON - Taking the fight to Saddam Hussein's elite troops near Baghdad, the United States hammered the Republican Guard with B-52 and B-2 stealth bombers in advance of the first major land battle of the war.

Saddam is so desperate to keep the United States from advancing on Baghdad that he's drawn a line around it in the sand - and if the Americans move beyond it, he'll counterattack with chemical weapons, The Post has learned.

Gotta love them B-52s. A few weeks of saturation bombing will break the enemy and then we can mop up what few survivors are left alive.

My eight-year old boy asked my wife tonight (while I was gone) how many soldiers had been killed. She said "ask Dad tomorrow - he knows more about it". I told her - well, as long as I only tell him about our soldiers (not wanting to say too high of a number). But, she then said he didn't want the other side's soldiers to die either. He said - why doesn't "that guy" just sign a treaty so they don't have to fight. My wife said "he has signed treaties, but he doesn't keep them". My son got teary eyed and kept saying - "He broke his treaties? He can't break his treaties". Keeping a promise is a big thing around our house.

I think I'll stay off the numbers, and instead talk about how brave our soldiers our fighting and how much progress they are making and how relatively few have been hurt. (And that its on the other side of the world!)

If SaddSacks' goons launch chem/bio rounds against our warriors, they'll pray for MOABs. The alternative is that "sticky" thing which turns sand to glass.

Answers the questions of "What are we waiting for?. Why don't we just send the B-52's in?" Just waiting for a sandstorm I guess.

Does anyone know whether the battlefield being conditioned is one where MOAB might be deployed?

It's the Big One (MOAB actually fits in a B-2; various tech/geek details)

Thanks. MOAB's deployment in the Red Zone would seem to be the litmus test for "shock and awe," methinks.

52's can put a mean "stick" of ordnance on target.

Char'em all. Let God figure it out.
