[history]
A conference at the Hotel John Marshall in Richmond offered a critical review of the 16th president as a local nonprofit group is preparing to unveil on April 5 a life-size, bronze statue of Lincoln and his young son, Tad.

I saw this in my local paper. Keep in mind that Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy, is now 60% black. Anything issue involving the "late unpleasantness" or race in general inevitably draws in groups from both sides like the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the NAACP. A city councilman (a disbarred lawyer now being tried for tax evasion) once threatened to start a riots over a painting of Robert E. Lee.
BTW, what is the opinion of lewrockwell.com among Freepers? I noticed the first article on the site is "Is 'National Review' a CIA Front?". *rolls eyes*

Lew(ser) Rockwell has actually said that segregation was GOOD for blacks.

Lew Rockwell is a wimpy, nerdy Yankee professor who thinks he can become a Hell's Angel by flying a rebel flag.

I'm a descendent of Southern Plantation aristocracy and Confederate soldiers. I often find myself routing for the South when reading books or watching movies about the War of Northern Aggression.
My opinion of Lew Rockwell and his site is this.
I like the Austrian Economics stuff and the Confederate stuff. I think he is pretty smart and entertaining when he isn't raving about "heroic" Capitalist Chinese. I also like reading Gary North's articles there, too.
To: Maedhros
He is hignly esteemed by libertarians, paleo's and adherents of the Austrian school of Economics. Quite a brilliant fellow in my book.

Lew(ser) Rockwell has actually said that segregation was GOOD for blacks. And I've always gotten a strong impression from him that he thinks that slavery was also good for blacks. choke

Oh, Sheesh . . .
now those hostile-to-Lincoln characters will be out selling their books or whatever again. Sigh.
Maybe it keeps them off the streets. Something to be said for that, I guess.

The French actually did have a good idea once, probably the only one, although it happened more than 200 years ago. They took all the intelligentsia, the royalty, etc. to a public place and introduced them all to their nifty new invention - the guillotine.

Up here in the North we call it "The War Of Illegal Southern Secession". I'm trying not to laugh as I type this. I hope you were laughing when you typed your term.

Lew Rockwell? Often disagree with his positions, ocassionally agree.
Lew Rockwell.com?
A pretty interesting site with some decent contributors and some nut cases.
I don't mind admitting I have a bit of the conspiracy theorist in my blood, and it's good to vent once in a while.
Just my opinion.

I hope you were laughing when you typed your term. I can't answer for Commander8, but I certainly don't laugh when I write about the War of Northern Aggression. It's a common expression among Southerners.

After seeing the term about 80 zillion times, uh yes, I am aware that many Southerners use it. So you won't mind if I use my term will you? Huh, whaddaya think? Illegal Southern Secession....has a nice ring to it.

No it's not. Most southerners could care less. I suppose that is why three southern governors have gotten booted out of office by the southern voters for messing with the confederate flag.

Never mind, Cap. Walt will not lower himself to be persuaded by the application of mere logic. After observing his obdurate and contentious posts on the AOL Civil War message boards a few years ago I came to realize that nothing will alter the absolutely adamantine quality of his mind. Don't waste your keystrokes; he is not amenable to reason on this subject. Since he jumps into any discussion of the South or the War it may be best simply to ignore him.
