About 30 Iraqi troops, including a general, surrendered today to US forces of the 3rd Infantry Division as they overtook huge installation apparently used to produce chemical weapons in An Najaf, some 250 kilometers south of Baghdad.
One soldier was lightly wounded when a booby-trapped explosive went off as he was clearing the sheet metal-lined facility, which resembles the eery images of scientific facilities in World War II concentration camps.
The huge 100-acre complex, which is surrounded by a electrical fence, is perhaps the first illegal chemical plant to be uncovered by US troops in their current mission in Iraq. The surrounding barracks resemble an abandoned slum.
It wasn't immediately clear exactly which chemicals were being produced here, but clearly the Iraqis tried to camouflage the facility so it could not be photographed aerially, by swathing it in sand-cast walls to make it look like the surrounding desert.

C'mon now, we all know it was a baby milk factory. When this war's over, we'll know that Iraq is the baby milk factory capital of the world...

The only mention of this story on the networks so far was George Stephanopoulous's question at the Centcom briefing. Abizaid wouldn't comment on it.

Tne protestors will wonder ask why we are carpet bombing innocent Iraqi civilians in order to put oil money into Bush's pocket. I don't give a damn what the protestors say.

I don't expect our guys to comment on any of this stuff until this things over with. The media will demand we stay there and destroy it all before going to Baghdad. In the end we will have catalogued everything we've found and we'll hold those that have supplied Saddam illegally to account.

Can you count to 10, clever Hans? Somebody is going to get slimed. I pray the casualties are light, and they can pull the unit out and do a deliberate decon. That would be the worst kind of hell to be forced to continue the mission with VX all over everything. If they slime us we would be justified in nuking them, if we can find a suitable target.

Hans Blix will claim and the French and Russians will nod heads jerking in agreement, that if he had been allowed more time, he would have found it...

I have been hearing alot of references lately to "fifth columnists." Can you explain the term to me. I am also looking for links to any explanations of the term and it's backround.
Thanks
To: jerryrivers
The term dates to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. Generalissimo Francisco Francos forces were advancing on the communists and socialists holding Madrid in four columns. As I recall, at some point Franco made a speech saying that the key to victory was the fifth column, who were already in the city and agitating for fascist victory.
During the early stages of WWII the term was used to describe Nazi sympathizers in European countries like Holland and Norway who committed acts of sabotage, blocked key transportation routes and worked politically to pave the way for the Nazis, sort of like what the peace protestors are doing today.

The Russian night vision equipment & jamming equipment that was discovered in Iraqwas a recent shipment and it had been packaged in UN humanitarian aid packages.

Thanks for your reply. Are you aware of any books or articles about the subject. It appears that this might be an area of discussion over the next few weeks and I would like to stay informed.
