Thanks for the 411. During the Gulf War, pre-Gore internet, I used my short-wave to monitor reports. Not that the big 4 networks weren't reporting factually. </sarcasm>

I have my share of QSL cards from the 1970's. The cold war was so much fun for me as a kid as it was waged on SW. The knucklehead man/woman team from Cuba, the persistant hum from radio Moscow. The voice of Vietnam, all the WWII stories from radio Moscow (John Wayne never told me that the Russians pretty well kicked Hitler's butt). Radio Tirana, the BBC and radio Nederland- oh to go back there again!

However, SW is over. I am sure that a few hanger onners will keep looking to make SW relevent again, but unless you personally experienced it, I don't think you will ever really be able to explain it to youngsters today.

Ya know, I kinda miss seeing him on TV, hearing him on the airwaves, etc. I know, sick. I guess it was the anticipation of the "next" big whopper, bald face lie, etc., to pass his wooden lips.

Granted, we still have a lot of DemoRats doing it now - but nobody looked / sounded as stupid as AlBot Gore doing it.

Yeah, it's a pity. Listening to a far-away station online doesn't quite have the same mystique.

BTW, my vote for coolest interval signal: Radio Tirana. My vote for most mind-numbing programs: Radio Tirana.

Anyone tried out the shortwave PCI cards for computers? They are a bit pricey but I would be interested in getting one. Reviews I have seen have been good but I have not talked with anyone that owns one directly.

Hi, Saw your post about your Drake. What kind do you have? I have a Drake SW 8. I got it several years ago when my hubby got his 62" Pioneer Elite TV. I have really enjoyed it.

Not really sure. The PCI card is sweet looking though! Many SW places I have listened to also have web sites. This is kind of cool too.

My 8 yr old son is in just absolute awe when I turn him loose on one of my rigs (Yaesu FT-840 and Icom 706 Mk IIG).

He has a list of foreign broadcast stations, a huge map of the world, and endless patience. To date, he has received 9 confirmed "QSL's".

You should see his face when he finds one in the mailbox - absolutely priceless!

The only problem is, "ok kid, your time is up - these are Dad's toy's and it's my turn to play!"

SWL is not over - not by a long shot.
