Clinton: New UN Resolution a Chance to Avert War

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Bill Clinton on Thursday endorsed British compromise proposals for a new U.N. Security Council resolution as the only chance to get Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to disarm without a war.

Speaking in New York, Clinton said the United States and other nations on the deeply divided council should take "one last shot" at trying to rally behind a resolution that would set Iraq a tight deadline to meet up to six specific disarmament demands or face attack.

"If we did, there is a chance that he will go on and disarm without war," Clinton told an audience at the 92nd St. Y, a Jewish community center in Manhattan.

The former president also said he believed Iraq's army would crumble within days in the event of a U.S. invasion, given the battering it took in the 1991 Gulf War.

"They may decide to fight house to house when we're rolling into Baghdad ... but if they don't, then this will be over in a couple of days," said Clinton, a Democrat.

With over 250,000 U.S. and British troops positioned to invade Iraq, President Bush maintains that he will launch a war without U.N. backing if necessary.

The United States and Britain have so far failed to muster the nine Security Council votes needed to pass the resolution, despite Britain's floating of the six requirements and its suggestion of an extension to a proposed March 17 deadline in an attempt at compromise.

Both countries decided not to bring the resolution to a vote on Friday after failing to win over undecided council members, pushing the impasse into the weekend. France has said it will veto any resolution that might lead to war.

Clinton said Iraq had to be disarmed in a way that strengthened the international community, and he praised British Prime Minister Tony Blair, a close friend, for his commitment to action through the United Nations.

Without criticizing Bush, he said the United States could not act without regard for the concerns of other countries simply because it was the dominant world power.

"I have found in life, in matters personal and political, that you have to be careful of doing things simply because you can," Clinton said.

I guess bubba did not hear that even the 6 point was shot down by the French.

The French did all they could to stop the Un even after Iraq had invaded another countyr back in 1991!!!

Of course now that we know that France is behind the WMD build up in Iraq in exchnage for 22.8% of Iraqie oil going through Fina it all makes sense.

France is part of the Axis of Evil.

Definately true. I was just taking a minute to update an old quote from an English king regarding a clergy member.

For someone who did NOTHING to combat terrorism during his administration, slick sure does have a lot of advice.

The fact that no one is asking for his advice means nothing to him. He loves the sound of his own voice.

Mr. President:

If you must have a second resolution, it should consist of a single sentence: "The Security Council finds Iraq in violation of Resolution 1441, which demanded `full and immediate compliance by Iraq without conditions or restrictions.'"

The resolution should be a statement not of policy but of fact. The fact is undeniable. You invite the French to cast what will be seen around the world as the most cynical veto in the history of the council, which is saying a lot. They may cast it. They are French. But then they--not you--will have to do the explaining for perpetrating such an obvious lie.

To bad the Dems don't get back to work.Estrada would be a judge, we'd be drilling in ANWR and taxes would be more fairly distributed. Obstructing the work of Republicans doesn't seem like real work to me.

Without criticizing Bush

The media are beyond belief. This must be the same speech Rush just read excerpts from. And the writer actually puts in black and white "without criticizing Bush". I suppose clinton didn't phrase it using President Bush's name so the writer thinks he can characterize it as above.

Also, Brit Hume played a clip yesterday from a speech clinton gave somewhere on Wednesday where he spoke of Tony Blair as our only ally and he sounded very bitter.
