NEW YORK, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Ringo Starr and Mark Hudson announced today the formation of their new label, pumkinhead records. It will be marketed and promoted by S Curve/EMI records and pumkinhead records' first signing, Liam Lynch, already has the number one requested single at LA's KROQ, even though "United States of Whatever" has not yet been officially released.

Ringo calls the single "the best two minutes I've heard in years."

"It's great -- we've got a hit before we even announced having a label! We're scrambling to get the record out to back up the demand for the music," co-founder Mark Hudson effused.

"Ringo and I created pumkinhead records to develop new artists," continued Mark. "It's about the music. Art for arts sake. We don't plan on signing many people and those we do sign will be as diverse as our tastes -- we could go from Liam Lynch to a Korn or a Celine Dion to a guy who plays bagpipes in a mini skirt kilt."

"We know the music we like, the music we want to hear and the artists we want to work with," said Ringo. "Hopefully we can give some newcomers a start -- that's my dream for it."

Ringo and Mark first met while working on Ringo's Vertical Man record in 1998. (Actually they met in the 70's, but neither remember the meeting, or for that matter very much from that decade). The collaboration grew into a friendship and their most recent musical venture, Ringo Rama, will be released on KOCH Records March 25, 2003.

Mark Hudson began his career in the music business in the early 70's as a member of the Hudson Brothers. From there he went on to write and produce many hit songs and albums for artists including Grammy Award winning Aerosmith ("Livin' on the Edge"), Celine Dion, Bon Jovi, Hanson, Ozzy Osbourne and the Scorpions.

The two hope the label will be a throwback to the creative spirit of multi-media little labels, such as MGM and Apple. As to the name? "I thought of the name pumkinhead, using pumpkin without the p," explained Ringo.

Adds Mark, "Ringo can't seem to get away from the fruit and vegetable family!"

Yes, it was Yesterday once more in 1994

Glenn Gamboa

The rumours, it turns out, were true. In 1994, the remaining Beatles, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, came together for an informal recording session that never saw the light of day — until Tuesday.

Footage of the trio performing the songs — Baby What You Want Me to Do, Raunchy, Thinking of Linking, Blue Moon of Kentucky and Ain’t She Sweet — made its world premiere at the New York Library for the Performing Arts, at a news conference to announce plans for the release of The Beatles’ Anthology DVD set.

Footage will be included in the box set, which hits stores on April 1, but can be seen at the Performing Arts library starting March 28.

However, Neil Aspinall, MD, Apple Corps Ltd., which handles The Beatles’ business affairs, denied that there were any plans to release the songs as a new album.

In a never-before-seen interview from 1994, included in the box set, Harrison said The Beatles were a quartet and that without John Lennon, the band no longer existed. ‘‘We weren’t going to get Roger Waters and go out as The Beatles,’’ Harrison said.

Aspinall confirmed, that about 50 to 60 hours of unreleased material had been discovered in The Netherlands and Australia and they were likely to be made public, perhaps on the Let It Be, scheduled for release late this year. (LATWP )
