Gov. Gray Davis' plan to save some money by merging California's ambitious high-speed rail project with the Department of Transportation has hit some rough track in the state Legislature.

The Legislature's budget analyst is recommending that lawmakers reject the proposal, saying the better move would be to leave high-speed rail under an independent board and cut some of the department's funding.

Sounds like Shady Grey is trying to shift the cost burden from his captives to, via the Fed Trans Dept, the rest of us. Stick it Shady.

This guy has, what, a 36 Billion deficit and he's worried about some 26 Billion boondogle. Damn, I'm glad I don't live in Kali. And my sympathy to FReeper Friends who do.

High speed rail only makes economic sense when the route is of sufficent length. Minimum routes of less than 200 miles offer no significant economic or logistic improvement over conventional rail. Specifically only two, uninterupted routes are economically justified in California. Sacramento to Bakersfield and San Francisco to Los Angeles or San Diego.

The California route structure, as it is now proposed, has become a political football and as a result defeats the purpose of high speed rail. In short Californians will pay for an expensive boondoggle.
