FNC just had a news alert stating that Kuwait was shutting down two oil production facilities, one in the North near the Iraqi boarder, and one in the West of the country. The two facilities are responsible for 1/3 of Kuwait's oil output.
Saudi Arabia is already operating at near capacity in order to make up for the lack of Venezuelan and Iraqi oil on the market.

They want to avoid damage (like they had in Gulf War I).

Ominous. Something is almost at hand and we know what that something is. You don't cut off one-third of your national revenue without a very good reason. Moreover, you don't do it for very long if you can help it.

The report stated that they feared the wells would be set on fire like in '91. That strikes me as specious, though, since there's a near 0% chance that Iraqi forces could get anywhere near them

The big guns are in place, now we are seeing the fine-tuning taking place.
Also just saw a blur on the networks about Gen, Tommy Franks returning to Washington DC for two days of briefings at the WH and Pentagon.
Gotta feeling this may be the time and place Bush will give the go orders.

Would shutting down the wells protect wellheads that had already been tapped? How do you shut off a wellhead?

Just another excuse for the oil companies to raise the prices on gasoline.
