DETROIT (AP) -- Former Democratic state Rep. Keith Stallworth plans to plead guilty to a federal charge to avoid a trial, his lawyer said.
Under the terms of the soon to be filed agreement, Stallworth will plead guilty to a felony charge of filing a false currency transaction report, attorney Christopher Andreoff told The Detroit News for a Sunday story.
In return for the plea, the government will drop the more serious charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, marijuana and heroin, the newspaper reported.
Under federal sentencing guidelines, Stallworth could get as little as probation and as much as seven months in prison, in addition to a fine, Andreoff said.
U.S. District Judge John Corbett O'Meara is scheduled to hear Stallworth's plea agreement on Friday.
The U.S. attorney's office did not return telephone calls from the newspaper seeking comment.
Stallworth, the one-time owner of a Detroit strip club, was elected to the Wayne County Commission in November, after six years in the state House. He couldn't run again for his state House seat because of term limits.
In a separate legal matter, Stallworth faces trial March 17 in Wayne Circuit Court on a felony charge of violating election law.
Drug distributors (like Stallworth) should be killed.
