March 10 issue — In the top drawer of his desk in the Oval Office, President George W. Bush keeps a list of the most-wanted Qaeda operatives. Whenever one is captured or killed, he crosses his name off. Last week the president was able to draw a line through a very big name, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, regarded by U.S. intelligence services as the mastermind of the 9-11 attacks.

March 1 — The suspected mastermind of the 9/11 attacks against the U.S., Kalid Shaik Mohamed was arrested in Pakistan. NBC’s Pete Williams reports.

MOHAMMED WAS NABBED by police at a hiding place in Rawalpindi, near the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. The CIA had been chasing him for years. In some ways, Mohammed, sometimes called “The Brain,” was a more urgent target than Osama bin Laden or Al Qaeda’s creepy Ayman Al-Zawahiri. Why? The CIA believes that the suave, well-educated, slightly pudgy Pakistani known to the feds as “KSM” was getting ready to hit the United States again.

Interesting coverage on Fox. They had Mansoor Ijaz, their Middle East expert, on Rita Cosby's Sunday evening news program earlier this evening, and he laid out some interesting timelines. It seems, the tip that led to this guys capture came several weeks ago from an anonymous tip in some other Arab country (UAE, was it?)

The breakthrough was so profound that they soon figured out on whose trail they were, and Ijaz thinks that many other big Al Queda fish are in the offing in the coming days.

It leads me to wonder whether the Iraqi campaign really had been slated for execution this weekend, but postponed by Bush, on the basis of this fast and furious info coming in on this Pakistani trail.

We had Saddam detroying a missile or three, I think expecting us to commence hostilities with 117 of his missiles left intact. Now if we delay, for other strategic reasons, he'll have to come up with new excuses in the next week, why he can not continue destroying multiple missles per day.

I'm amazed at Bush's patience. But if these top AQ can provide vital intelligence info, it is possible a delay of days to weeks could save significant lives.

p.s. They noted the significant change in appearance on Fox as indicative that top AQ guys are undergoing plastic surgery to change appearances... which is also why bin Laden no longer does videos.
