Hezbollah Official Shot Dead in Beirut

BEIRUT, Lebanon Feb. 28 — A top security official of the militant Hezbollah group was fatally shot at his home in the Lebanese capital, Lebanese and Hezbollah officials said Friday.
Nimr Noureddin, the head of a Hezbollah security branch in Beirut, was gunned down late Thursday after answering the door, said Lebanese security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Hezbollah members detained the suspected shooter, Youssef Mohammed Murad, and handed him over to Lebanese security forces, officials said.
Later Friday, the Iranian-backed group released a statement saying Noureddin was "killed by treachery."
The statement said Murad had sought to join Hezbollah for a decade but had been blocked by Noureddin. The statement did not elaborate.
The killing occurred in the predominantly Shiite Muslim suburb of Bir Hassan, which is a Hezbollah stronghold and where its security men keep close watch on outsiders.
Hezbollah, which is on the State Department's list of terrorist organizations, led a guerrilla war against Israel's 18-year occupation of a border zone in southern Lebanon that ended in May 2000.
Hezbollah media chief Sheik Hassan Ezzedine said Noureddin was buried in his hometown in southern Lebanon on Friday.
