WHEN MICHAEL LERNER volunteered to give blood and urine samples to medical researchers, he figured they'd only find a few chemicals in his body. After all, Lerner, the president and founder of Commonweal, a health and environmental research institute in Marin County, has lived in Bolinas for 20 years, eaten a healthy diet and avoided exposure to industrial chemicals.

I found this fascinating. Marin County has the highest rate of cancer in the country. Perhaps this is why.

We're living longer than ever before.

But on a personal note, I have all my mother's health problems and some more besides, and I'm 22 years younger. The amount of cancer in the family is frightening. I'm the oldest person in my extended family who has not yet had cancer.

I think the accumulation of unknown chemicals in our body certain DOES mean something.

Marin is across the bay, and up-river, from a group of petroleum refineries and storage areas in places Richmond, Hercules, Martinez. It could be that, over the years, winds and water flow have brought chemicals to Marin.

That's very interesting. I wonder if the scientists who study this are aware of that. They seem so clueless.
