Why does buying a product entitle anyone to have everything the company creates after that for free?

I have 1996 truck. Ford has utterly failed to keep my truck up to date whenever they come out with a new one! Cheats! - Profiteers!

jeesh.

If you bought a truck from a software vendor, it would come with only three wheels and you'd have to download the fourth. It'd be configured for left-hand-lane driving and you'd have to download a patch to drive in the right hand lane, but you can only switch after turning it off. If you don't use the vendor-approved fuel it will destroy itself. Also, wherever you drive will be tracked and reported.

Yeah, but if there is a safety defect in it, the Federal government mandates that the company must issue a recall and

FIX IT

That's the wrong analogy. Try this one:

You have a 1996 Ford. Do you expect them to issue security/safety recalls? Do you expect them to perform that work at no extra cost? Do you expect them to provide parts and service for that truck (to keep it safe and running)--even though they have come out with a new version?

But if your truck had design flaws, Ford would be obligated to fix it. How would you feel if Ford wrote you a letter saying Dear Customer, your truck is not safe at all. Please go to your dealer and get the $500 safety update......

Ford can't do that, because Chevy or Toyota or Dodge would be the next truck you bought. Windows users don't have that option.

Yes, but ford doesn't send out security updates that cause your truck to explode, crash, or require you to by gas from a specific gas station... ;)
