THE LEFT COAST REPORT

A Political Look at Hollywood

Mia Farrow took some time out from her anti-death-penalty fund raiser, and the play she's in about people wrongly sentenced to death, to talk to the Washington Post and whack the president on the death penalty issue.

Farrow indicated that she has "always been against the death penalty." She criticized President Bush for the 152 executions that occurred when he was governor of Texas.

"That is heartbreaking and tragic, putting it mildly," she said. "I would think that at the very least he would have been agonizing over this, and not making fun of someone like Karla Faye Tucker. Maybe it's some sort of cowboy thing."

The Left Coast Report says if following the rule of law is a "cowboy thing," all good leaders ought to saddle up.

Media Are Picking the Daisies

A television commercial that was considered to be a significant factor in the loss of Republican Barry Goldwater to Democrat Lyndon Johnson has been reproduced in a campaign against George W. Bush. Like the original, the ad depicts a girl plucking petals from a daisy, while a missile launch countdown is heard and a nuclear mushroom cloud appears. The revived spot is brought to the public courtesy of the Internet-based group MoveOn.org

The new version contains a warning that a war might spread to other countries and end with "the unthinkable." It concludes with the message "Maybe that's why the overwhelming majority of Americans say to President Bush: 'Let the inspections work.'"

Thanks to the eagle eyes over at Media Research Center, some incredible inconsistencies in news reporting about the ad are available for all to see. During the 2000 presidential campaign, ABC's World News Tonight categorically denounced an anti-Gore version of the "daisy ad." But last week, ABC's Peter Jennings was happy to accommodate the new one. ABC celebrated the new anti-war movement, which has "gone from the streets to the information highway."

Also last week, some other poor excuses for journalism chimed in. The CBS Evening News cited the new "daisy" ad to show "a growing anti-war backlash that's about to get a lot more vocal."

The Left Coast Report notes that the liberal bias on both coasts is getting to be so obvious, if a polygraph were hooked up to your TV, the darn thing would explode within a billionth of a second.

The Ex-Wives Club

Poor Mick. How much embarrassment can one old rocker take? The New York Post's Page Six reports that Jagger's two ex-wives are on the move.

Bianca was following Sean Penn's lead and engaging in a "fact-finding" trip to Iraq. Meanwhile, second ex, Jerry Hall, was busy backing up beleaguered Who guitarist, Pete Townshend. Hall said, "He advised me how to prevent my children from gaining access to [kiddie porn] sites." Townshend was arrested a few hours after the statement was issued.

The Left Coast Report says with ex's like that, it'll probably take "Wild Horses" to get Mick to the altar again.

Patricia Heaton Has Conservative Hearts a Beatin'

Patricia Heaton already demonstrated her class and courage when she unabashedly proclaimed her pro-life beliefs in public. Apparently, she's showing off both traits again.

Heaton walked out in the middle of the American Music Awards and took a pass on doing her segment of the show.

Why? Well, Heaton told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the swearing and racy jokes of the Osbournes and various other presenters turned the program into a "vulgar and disgusting show."

The actress was particularly appalled at one presenter's references to three-way sex and Sharon Osbourne's joke about Mariah Carey's upper body parts.

Ryan Seacrest didn't help things either when he pulled open Kathy Griffin's shirt and told a young girl in the audience, "Don't worry, honey, you'll have a pair of these soon."

Heaton said the show was like being "in the Roman Coliseum." According to the "Everybody Loves Raymond" star, it was "an affront to anyone with a shred of dignity, self-respect and intelligence."

The Left Coast Report applauds Heaton and hears that the Osbournes were so crass, the network censor had to have emergency treatment on his "bleep button" finger.

Sheryl Crow's Peace Plan

"Hey everybody, I know this is an award show but I just want to encourage everybody to get involved in some kind of movement for peace."

These were the words of Sheryl Crow as she introduced patriotic country singer Toby Keith during the American Music Awards. She was wearing a specially made T-shirt that bore the slogan "War is not the answer."

The singer later told the press: "I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow. I think war is never the answer to solving any problems. The best way to solve problems is to not have enemies."

The Left Coast Report wonders if in her next life Crow will come back as Xena the Warrior Princess.

Bare Bill

The man who told us that "is" isn't is and "sex" isn't sex seems to be having a little problem with words again.

According to the New York Post, Bill Clinton had an unusual reaction at a benefit called "Seeds for Peace." Someone asked the former occupant of the Oval Office whether he would pose backstage with the Bare Naked Ladies.

One can only imagine the expression on the Slick One's face.

Bill soon realized, much to his chagrin, that this was the name of a band playing for the event, not a bevy of beauties in the buff awaiting his arrival.

The Left Coast Report hopes that the ex-prez doesn't have to do any events with the Goo Goo Dolls.

Silent No More

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at the U.S. Senate Dirksen Building Auditorium in Washington, D.C., an extraordinary event will take place.

On the 30th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Ninth Annual National Memorial for the Preborn and their Mothers and Fathers will take place. Women who have been injured by abortion will gather with men who have lost children to abortion.

Perhaps even more stunning to many will be the person who will offer comments and a prayer during the event.

She's the national spokesperson for the Silent No More Campaign. She's also a Hollywood actress, model and author. She's the beautiful and inspiring Jennifer O'Neill, and she'll be directing the event.

The Left Coast Report gives a standing ovation to O'Neill for speaking out for the smallest, most innocent and most ignored Americans – the little citizens in the womb.

The Left Coast Report is put together by James L. Hirsen and the staff of NewsMax.

Seems like Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) has broken ranks with her air-headed cohorts. Good for her.
