When I first arrived in DC a couple of centuries ago, one of the pleasures was my proximity to the Sutton Place Gourmet in Bethesda (Old Georgetown Road). The food was outstanding, the service was excellent and the staff - particularly the cheese department - was knowledgable in the extreme. Over the course of a dozen years, I saw all of these tangibles and intangibles go by the wayside and the quality of the place just diminish. By the time I left the DC area, I rarely, if ever, went there (in spite of it being a five-minute walk away from my house).
With Balducci's gone the only specialty food store left is the shrine to all that is epicurean - Zabar's.

OH NO! I brought a pear tart from Balducci's to a dinner party recently and was hailed as a hero. That store will be missed.

Thanks for a story with a strong anti-capitalist slant. Perhaps you can forward it to the Bush administration. They love this kind of thing, since it slams some venture capitalists without ever getting their side of the story, and they want to convince people that government knows best, and that our capital markets need to be regulated to death. If you hurry, there's still time to get it in the president's SOTU address.
