FNC News Anchor Lauren Green is competitive amateur pianist
FNC Fox & Friends ^ | January 17, 2003 | E. D. Hill

This morning when introducing Lauren Green's news segment on Fox & Friends, E.D. mentioned that Lauren is an outstanding amateur pianist and competes annually in the Van Cliburn Competition for Outstanding Amateurs! Sure enough, Lauren is listed among this years competitors. What I wouldn't give to hear Lauren and Condi Rice perform together! Perhaps Medtner's Russian Round Dance or Knight Errant! (She's listed below under US competitors from New York)

75 CONTESTANTS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN VAN CLIBURN FOUNDATION’S THIRD

INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION FOR OUTSTANDING AMATEURS ™

IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS, JUNE 3 - 8, 2002

International peacemaker, missionary, and CD-ROM game composer among participants from around the world and all walks of life

Copyright 2002 Van Cliburn Foundation Fort Worth, Texas, April 1, 2002 - The Van Cliburn Foundation has announced the 75 selected participants for the third INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION FOR OUTSTANDING AMATEURS™, to be held at Ed Landreth Auditorium on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, June 3 through 8.

Designed to encourage and recognize the importance of music-making, both off and on stage, this event features pianists above the age of 35 whose principal source of income is not derived from piano performance or teaching piano. It will begin with the preliminary round (June 3-5), during which each pianist will perform a 12-minute recital. The semifinal round (June 7) will showcase up to 18 pianists performing 20-minute recitals. The final round (June 8) will feature six finalists performing 30-minute recitals and will be followed by an awards ceremony. The repertoire for each round is unrestricted, except that a pianist may not repeat works from round to round. All phases of the competition are open to the public. To purchase tickets, call the Central Ticket Office at 817-335-9000. Alternately, you may print out the Ticket Order Form to order tickets for the competition.

The third International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs™ is sponsored by Steinway & Sons and The Pangburn Foundation, Bank One, Trustee.

COMPETITORS

This year’s participants come from Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, and 25 states throughout the United States. Out of 130 applicants, 75 were selected to participate, including 14 doctors, four college professors, four composers, four homemakers, four computer programmers, three attorneys, three engineers, two accountants, two librarians, two piano technicians, a flight attendant purser, a news anchor, a missionary, and a railroad manager. (Due to dropouts, only 73 competitors will be at the competition.)

Return IPCOA competitor Debra Saylor is a visually impaired sales associate from Omaha, Nebraska, whose inspirational life was the subject of WBAP-AM’s award-winning 2001 radio broadcast, “She Found God in the Silences.”

After web developer Greg Fisher participated in the 2000 Amateur Competition, ABC told his triumphant story of overcoming drug addiction through music as part of its World News Tonight series, 21st Century Lives. Fisher has recently relocated to North Texas.

Janie Leatherman, the author of several books on war prevention, is a professor of international relations and the director of peace and conflict resolution studies at Illinois State University. Israeli-born veterinarian Nathan Srebernik, who lives in London, served as a tank commander for the Israeli army, and Suzanne Fremon, a computer programmer from New York, recently opened a hypnotherapy practice for pregnant women.

Los Angeles composer Paul Romero creates musical scores for CD-ROM strategy games, and Mark Horowitz serves as cantor for the Temple Israel in Columbus, Ohio, in addition to his job as executive director for the Bureau of Jewish Education in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. Berkeley resident and computer programmer Rocky Nevin wrote his doctoral dissertation on the neural network of the common cricket, and Richard Katz, a physician from Clayton, Missouri, recently recorded his own CD synthesizing classical, jazz, and pop elements—combining Chopin and Beethoven with Sting and Stevie Wonder. For a complete list of participants, their hometowns, and occupations, please see below. Please email requests for photographs or complete biographies to leeann@cliburn.org.

PRIZES

All performers will receive gifts for participating and will compete for a top prize of $2000 cash as part of the Jury Awards. The Press Jury will also award prizes, and the audience at the finals will vote for its favorite. Additional awards include best performances of works from various musical eras, Most Creative Programming Award, and Jury Discretionary Awards.

JURY

A select panel composed of prominent pianists, teachers, and other music professionals will adjudicate the amateur pianists. The Jury is chaired by John Giordano, retired music director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Other Jury members are Shields-Collins Bray, pianist of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra; David Karp, professor of piano at Southern Methodist University; Phillip Kawin, pianist and professor of piano at the Manhattan School of Music; Gabriel Kwok, head of keyboard studies at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts; Carol Leone, professor of piano at Southern Methodist University; Harold Martina, pianist and professor of piano at Texas Christian University; John Owings, pianist and Herndon Professor of Piano at Texas Christian University; Antonio Pompa-Baldi, silver medal winner in the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; Jack Roberts, professor of piano at the University of North Texas; and Alina Rubinstein, pianist, psychiatrist, and daughter of Artur Rubinstein.

The Press Jury is chaired by William Littler, music critic of The Toronto Star. Other Press Jury members are Scott Cantrell, music critic of The Dallas Morning News; Daniel Cariaga, music critic of the Los Angeles Times; Richard Dyer, music critic of The Boston Globe; Stuart Isacoff, author and editor of Piano Today; James Roos, music critic of The Miami Herald; John von Rhein, music critic of the Chicago Tribune; and Charles Ward, music critic of the Houston Chronicle.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES

Competitors who are not selected for the semifinal round will have an opportunity to play their remaining repertoire for the general public during a Piano Marathon at the Fort Worth Public Library’s downtown location. Performance times are Thursday, June 6, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Friday, June 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Two Symposia with the competition's jury are scheduled for June 6 and 7 at TCU's PepsiCo Recital Hall and are open to the general public: on June 6 at 10:30 a.m., members of the Jury will discuss what they listen for when judging the competition; on June 7 at 10:15 a.m., music critics of the Press Jury will participate in a symposium called "Do It Yourself: the Importance of Hands-on Music Making." On June 5, the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM) will host a symposium on medical and performing issues for participants, sponsored by the Texas Center for Music and Medicine. Additionally, competitors will have the opportunity to read through chamber music scores privately with professional musicians. Numerous social activities are also planned.

Created in cooperation with the highly successful Concours des Grands Amateurs de Piano, founded in 1989 and held annually in Paris, France, the 1999 International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs™ was the first competition of its kind in the United States. A second Amateur Competition followed in 2000. The event now takes place every two years, with the fourth competition scheduled for June 2004.

The Van Cliburn Foundation is principally known for the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held every four years in Fort Worth, Texas since 1962. A distinction from the Van Cliburn Competition, which is open to professional pianists between the ages of 18 and 30, is the Amateur Competition’s minimum age requirement of 35.

Steinway & Sons is the official piano of the Amateur Competition. ExxonMobil is the Principal Corporate Sponsor of the Van Cliburn Foundation. American Airlines, Citigroup, City of Fort Worth, Lexus, Nokia, RadioShack, Star-Telegram, and Steinway & Sons are Official Corporate Sponsors.

I think she was 2nd or 3rd running up for Miss America around 1986. She's still pretty hot to be pushing 40.

Wasn't she also Miss Minnesota? I thought I heard the crazies on Fox and Friends mention this.

She is beautiful as well as talented. She provides the few moments of sanity and dignity on that show (which I love, BTW). Like to start the day off with a laugh or two before work.

Cal Thomas opened one of his shows with her playing the piano. As the article has already pointed out, she is excellent.

I thought that was Lauren Green playing the piano on Cal's new Saturday night show. She is excellent!

Cal's half-hour show on Fox News - After Hours with Cal Thomas - on Saturday nights at 11PM ET is very good, BTW.

Wow, I think she's very attractive, but had no idea about her Miss Universe title. I like Cal Thomas' show. I get a kick out of it because its a bit of a throw-back, but still really good. Lauren Green on the piano is a nice addition, great for its time slot and alot of fun on Saturday nights.
