Bee Gees singer dies

Bee Gees star Maurice Gibb has died in a Miami hospital at the age of 53, his family have confirmed in a statement.

The singer had suffered a heart attack during emergency surgery for an intestinal blockage.

A spokesperson for his family said he died in the Mount Sinai Medical Centre's intensive care unit about 0045 local time (0545 GMT).

Twin brother Robin Gibb was at Maurice's bedside after flying in from London just an hour before.

Also present were friends and other family members, including older brother Barry, wife Yvonne, and the singer's children.

Maurice had briefly regained consciousness and recognised a number of relatives, but his condition later deteriorated.

His relatives had been warned to expect the worst as his condition had become "disappointing" and it was thought likely he would have to be put on a ventilator and had suffered brain damage.

"One more hour and my life will be through..."

Sad, really....just the first lyric that jumped into my mind.

It's horrible. The Bee Gees were my very first concert. My mom took me to see them in 1977, just as the whole Saturday Night Fever thing was exploding. I was all of seven years old, and had an awesome time.

They're the only band to make the charts in five consecutive decades.

Makes me feel even older. I can still remember 1978 when they were all over the radio. As much as I dislike disco as a whole, the stuff the BeeGees did was pretty good.

Thus passes part of a song-writing machine that was, at its best, the equal of Lennon & McCartney.

BEE GEE MAURICE DIES

Bee Gee Maurice Gibb has died in hospital in Miami.

The 53-year-old had been in a critical condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack during an operation to remove an intestinal blockage after he collapsed at his Florida home last week.

His wife Yvonne, two children and twin brother Robin had been with him at the Mount Sinai Medical Centre in Miami since the surgery on Thursday night.

A statement released by his family said: "It is with great sadness and sorrow that we regretfully announce the passing of Maurice Gibb this morning.

"His love and enthusiasm and energy for life remain an inspiration to all of us. We will all deeply miss him."

Watching the BBC last night, I knew he wouldn't make it. The American news outlets totally white-washed his condition.

And we're down to 2 Beatles and 2 Gibbs.

EXTRA CREDIT TRIVIA: The BeeGees were born on the Isle of Man.

I don't know, but they said it was a "recurring problem" for him. No one expected his heart to fail during surgery.

I'm reliving the torture that the Bee Gess wrought upon me in my youth. Hate to see a man die so young and I'm not looking forward to the radio playing that crap again as a tribute.
