WASHINGTON -- Libel lawsuits can become double-edged swords, as Ceres Rep. Gary Condit and his wife, Carolyn, might discover.

By filing three lawsuits seeking a total of $36 million, the Condits initiated a high-stakes counterattack against the media that they believe defamed them. But that means the politician's family, which has placed a premium on privacy, becomes vulnerable to intrusive questioning.

This could get more lurid than the Danielle van Dam murder trial. And no, I'm not looking forward to it.

I have the opinion that the DC Police are guitly of the obstrucion of justice in this case. At first, they even refused to consider that a congressman might be guilty of
having sex with Chanra Levy, which would have made him the prime suspect. The DC police failed to seek justice in this matter, and they let a filthy lying man escape
questioning for murder. God knows who really killed Chandra Levy, and even if they escape justice in this world, they will face the Almighty, one day. I suspect that Condit hired the job done, but did not do it himself, but I may never know the real truth. Maybe his search for some "free money" will be telling.

An unwise lawsuit against Whittaker Chambers was what sent Alger Hiss to prison for four years. Chambers had accused Hiss of being a communist and a Soviet agent in public, and Hiss sued for slander thinking Chambers had no proof, plus knowing that his own position in the DC hierarchy and the U.S.-communist lie machine would protect him.

But his and his wife's endless, conflicting lies during the lawsuit got him charged with perjury and eventually convicted (the statute of limitations on espionage had run out in his case.) His wife was never charged with perjury which I have always found puzzling.

Condit is taking a big chance if he actually did kill Chandra. There is no statute of limitations on murder.
