Inmates Charged With Hate Crime After Prison Fight Erupts Over Pet Spider
Published: Dec 19, 2002
James Borland suffered a skull fracture and needed brain surgery after the Dec. 11 attack, Charlotte Correctional Institution officials said. He could be released from Lee Memorial Hospital as early as Thursday but still has a year to serve on a sentence for hit-and-run and cocaine charges, jail records show.
Inmates Lemuel Ware and Corey Andrews were charged with aggravated battery of a prisoner, elevated to a felony because they allegedly taunted Borland with racial slurs, officials said. They could face life sentences if convicted.
Both were transferred to Charlotte County Jail, where they are held without bail and are to be arraigned Jan. 27 on the new charges, officials said.
Ware, convicted of carjacking, had been scheduled for release in 2008. Andrews, who was jailed on battery charges, was scheduled to be released in 2005.
Inmates are not allowed to have any pets, including spiders, warden Warren Cornell said. It's not uncommon, however, he said.
What the over/under on Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton being there before Christmas?
Maybe because of what they did to the spider.
