When Arloon is his only defender, you know Lott is in trouble.. They hope to bring it up to the point that Lott resigns from the Senate. It is really hard to take this much abuse. Since Bush jumped on him, he will almost certainly have to resign before the first of the year. I give him a week or two at most.
If he resigns his senate seat then the Democratic Governor of Mississipi will appoint a Democrat to replace Lott. That makes teh senate a tie just like two years ago
That leaves Chaffee and Snowe as the objects of the biggest bidding war you have ever seen. I think Daschle will be high bidder. In any event kiss the Bush agenda bye bye. ArLoon just does not want to go back to being in the Senate minority.
But that is where he is likely going.
You are going to love the look on Jeffords face as he sits down as chairman of his Senate committee next year.

But Haley Barbour will win the Mississippi Governors Chair in 2003.
If Lott is going to drop out of the Senate, he will wait until then..

If he resigns as Senate Majority Leader it will be yesterday's news. I'd hate to have to see him quit the Senate but if he does I wouldn't be surprised. A Democrat can be no worse for Missisippi than he has been. So we lose our majority again? Like that's news.

Not gonna happen that way. Bush et al will pressure Lott to be a team player. He can have a choice committee chairmanship and continue doing what he does best - feeding the porcine pipeline to MS.

Regardless .. It's still to close for comfort

No the bidding war to keep chaffee and Snowe will be the Mqajority Leadership. There will be NO conservative elected if this lynching works.

I bet you a texasforever, two TLBSHOWs and throw in a real mushy moderate conservative for good measure that Bush will have Trent thankfull that he's still in the Senate before this is over.

If it turns out that way and the Senate ends up back with the DEms in charge, be sure to kiss your hero, Lott's hairy ass as he bids fairwell. He was a lousy leader and he threw it all away because whenever he thought of the good old days of fighting integration at Ol Miss, he couldnt keep it to himself.

I find myself in an odd position here.
Usually I look forward to your posts and agree with them as I find them very well thought out and posessing what I like to call "3 dimensional thinking."
I also tend to dismiss the "Big L" Libertarians' proclivity to principle at all costs, even if it means losing the means to advance your philosophy in the future.
But how much are you willing to accept in order to maintain political power?
What we have here is the leader of our party in the Senate saying that the country would be better off if a segregationist had been elected President. And no, I don't buy the excuses that he was just patting an old collegue on the butt on his way to the sidelines. There can be no reasonable confusion here. The Dixiecrats' primary message was segregation.
It was not a hidden plank in the platform.
No one with Lott's experience in government and the history thereof can credibly purport to think otherwise.
And please, nobody give me the Byrd, Fullbright rationalle. Those cases make for good fodder in their own discussions. We are not the Democrats. We do not look the other way when one of our own craps in our nest.
We are supposed to be the party of principle, reason, equality before the law.
So again I ask - What are you willing to accept to maintain power?

There is almoist ZERO chance that Lott resigns completely. I see it as 50-50 that he stays Majority Leader and with Christmas coming the news cycle will change. Lott isn't one of the brighter guys we have so I'd like to see a change.
Here's my wishfil thinking outcome. McCain decides to rejoin the Republican Party and the elect him majority leader. He's the one guy who can deflect the press but I realize he's not all there these days. Frist did a nice job with the elections so I'd have to say he's my favorite simply on politics. McConnell is pretty sharp as well. I don't think Lott is in any position now to play the kind of politics we're going to see from the Demos. It's going to get even nastier.

I disagree.
I don't think Bush wants to bring it up to the point where Lott resigns from the Senate. Arlen Specter is giving Trent cover to hang around as Leader for a while.

All the more reason to make him step down as leader now, to turn down the heat on a full resignation.
