Neugebauer officially enters race for District 19 seat

Lubbock real estate developer Randy Neugebauer publicly announced his intentions to run for Congress today, saying he wants to be part of the conservative leadership in Washington.

"It will be an honor to represent you in the spirit of Ronald Reagan and under the leadership of George W. Bush in Washington," Neugebauer told about 100 supporters at a morning news conference.

He said he would support abolishing a tax on inheritance, known as the "death tax," and would work to uphold traditional family values, local control of education, commitments to the elderly and veterans and a strong economy and national defense.

Neugebauer, a Republican, talked about the importance of the 435 U.S. House and 100 U.S. Senate members.

"Those are the 535 most important votes in the world. I don't take that responsibility lightly," he said. "I want to help the president make a difference."

Neugebauer hopes to succeed U.S. Rep Larry Combest, R-Lubbock, who will resign May 31, 2003, to be with his wife. Combest has held the seat since 1984.

Larry Johnson, a Lubbock Libertarian, also has announced a campaign for the seat.

Several other potential candidates from the 19th District, which includes Lubbock, Midland, Odessa and Big Spring, have said they are considering a run for the office.

Neugebauer is a residential and commercial developer who served on the City Council from 1992-96. He is the chairman of the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor Coalition, which won congressional designation of a major highway from Mexico to Denver.

Anyone have an update on this race? I would think Isett is going to have a good shot, but Neugebauer might be strong, also.

With so many candidates, there is expected to be a special election runoff between two Republicans early in June. None of the Democrats is considered a likely winner. One of the Republicans, however, is a former Democrat who switched only to enter this special election, a former Lubbock Mayor named David Langston.

I think Isett and Langston make the run off and then Isett beats the Dem, er, former Dem, senseless.

Another possibility would be Neubebaueru and Isett in the run off....Isett wins by a hair b/c he is a State Rep.

Interesting race all in all.
