From A Jawa page:
Jawas are natives of the desert wastes of Tatooine, and the rodent like creatures are actually quite intelligent but their foul smell restricts them from taking up any higher position in society then scavengers. About a metre in height and very talkative, but only in their own language, gives them the image of just irritating little pests but their trade in unwanted goods all over Tatooine makes them an integral part of the planets industrial structure.

To protect themselves from the planets red hot dual suns the Jawas wear coarse home spun cloaks with hoods, leaving their glowing eyes the only thing visible. They travel and live in clans transported by giant tracked vehicles known as sandcrawlers, each of these huge crawlers can hold up to 300 Jawas as well as droids and other machinery they scavenge repair then resell to Tatooines moisture farmers amongst others.

The Jawas primary source of food is the hubba gourd, a difficult-to-digest fruit, in the Jawa language hubba means "the staff of life". For water the Jawas insert long hoses into the stems of the Funnel Flower, a flower native to Tatooine that lodges itself between rocks on cliff faces and collects moisture captured in its huge fanned out leaves.

Jawa society is tightly knit, with large family units, there are in fact 43 different terms to describe relationships in the Jawa language. Also lineage, blood lines and family history is very important to the creatures and each are recorded meticulously.

Once each year before the storm season on Tatooine, Jawas from all over the desert wastes trek to the great basin of the Dune Seafor a huge secret, (only amongst Jawas), rendezvous that becomes a great swap meet where they exchange anything and everything they have scavenged.
