Kansas City police arrested a man early this afternoon they believe to be involved in the shooting death of a grade-school boy and the wounding of the boy's mother.
The man was arrested about 1:15 p.m. as he sat in a white Jeep Cherokee outside Don's Liquors at 3000 Southwest Blvd.
The boy, a student at St. James School in Liberty, was shot in the parking lot outside his school shortly after noon today following an apparent argument between the mother and the man, believed to be the boy's father.
The victim's mother was critically wounded, said Lt. Mark Misenhelter of the Liberty Police Department. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police received a call from a friend of the man who was talking with him on a cellular phone. The friend told the man to stay at the liquor store and that he would meet him there. Instead, police met the man, surrounding his car with their guns drawn.
Police said the man initially was uncooperative and they had to tackle him. The man was not carrying a gun when he was apprehended.
The woman came to St. James to pick up the boy. The man arrived shortly after and argued with the woman.
The man pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots. He fled by car.
Police have not released the name, age or grade of the victim.
No other injuries were reported.
