Ballance claims Clayton seat

A Democratic heir apparent and an incumbent Republican were handily winning their bids to represent Pitt and surrounding counties in the U.S. Congress.

Incomplete totals at The Daily Reflector's deadline on Tuesday showed that U.S. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr., a Farmville Republican, was trouncing a Libertarian challenger from Cary, Gary Goodson, to win his fifth term to the 3rd District seat.

Frank Ballance, a Democratic state senator from Warrenton, soundly defeated Republican Greg Dority and Libertarian Mike Ruff to succeed U.S. Rep. Eva Clayton in the 1st District congressional race.

Dority is from Washington, N.C. Ruff is from Greenville.

Clayton, a five-term Democrat who announced her retirement earlier this year, endorsed Ballance early on in his campaign.

He was a partner in her husband's law firm and a longtime supporter.

As of 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday, with 129 of 263 precincts reporting, Ballance was winning with 37,205 votes to Dority's 22,112 and Ruff's 1,005, according to incomplete results from The Associated Press.

The State Board of Elections had Ballance at 45,394, Dority at 27,401 and Ruff at 1,251 at the same time, but its Web site did not report the number of precincts reporting.

Jones had 37,468 votes to Goodson's 4,542, according to The Associated Press.

Incomplete results from the State Board of Elections had Jones with 95,467 votes to Goodson's 11,146.

Too bad for Mr. D.  It would have been a triumph!

However I look forward to more inflammatory rhetoric on the Balkans threads now that certain alter egos will have more time on their hands.

A stunning defeat for the North Carolina Bismarck!

Despite the assistance of a handful of America's best, Mr. D was routed at the polls.

Forces of freedom have been stalled!  Washington sighs relief!
