Editorial: Teen's disappearance leaves grief, frustration
November 01, 2002
The disappearance last week of Christopher Dixon is devastating to his family, heartbreaking for the community and frustrating for law-enforcement officials. No one knows whether the 13-year-old High Point boy ran away or was abducted. High Point police lean toward the first possibility, but an expert on such cases thinks abduction is more likely. Police say they have received calls reporting possible sightings of the boy, but nothing so far seems to have provided a definite lead.
By all accounts, Christopher was not the type of youngster to run away from home. Except for a minor problem at his school, Shining Light Christian Academy in Greensboro, there was nothing he would have been running from. And he didn't take a coat, money or anything else that would hint that he planned to leave home.
His family moved to High Point from Pelzer, S.C., only a few weeks ago, but he has not turned up there. Again, it apparently was not in his nature to be so homesick for a former place of residence that he would leave his parents and siblings, to whom he was very attached.
Yet, High Point police believe Christopher most likely did run away. And the first statement the boy's mother, Holly Dixon, made in speaking to the media Tuesday was directed to her son:
"Chris, we love you so much, and we miss you so much. We just want to get a little hug from you. Please, come home and you won't be in any trouble whatsoever."
She went on to appeal to a possible abductor: "If you have our son, please bring him home and don't hurt him."
Charles Pickett of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in Alexandria, Va., has been involved in the case since Saturday and thinks abduction by a non-family member is possible. He recommends a wide search because abducted children sometimes are found very far from home.
Christopher's disappearance has generated media attention across the country. The more people who know his name and have seen his picture the better. Everyone should look out for the boy and report any scrap of information that might help.
This is a devastating, heartbreaking and frustrating story. We join with those who are praying for a happy ending.
