They are playing it down because they quietly need to determine its cash value. Large meteorites go for big money and if that thing is a piece of a star - well - who knows what it's worth.

For some reason, they seem to attract the 'big ones'. Maybe they have discovered a new natural resource. Of course, one day they may attract one that's a little TOO big.
