The plan is viewed with skepticism by some civil-liberties and national voter-rights organizations and local activists, who say the idea of uniformed police at polling places brings back memories of the 1950s and '60s, when blacks fought for the right to vote.

If I remember correctly, uniformed officers were stationed at polling places to ensure that all citizens, especially minorities, could to exercise their right to vote.

I would think that memories of a hard-fought battle won would be cherished.

''You have to look at it as another event that has to be carefully coordinated,'' Mazzella said last week.

Yeah, we need doughnut jockeys carefully coordinating in poling places just about as much as we need them in our bedrooms.

''I have heard people say this is ridiculous. It goes to show how screwed up our government is,'' said Rivera, who expressed his own reservations. ``I disagree we should be doing this, but we're the best qualified to handle the job.''

This takes the cake. His own election officials, ALL Democrats, can't run a basic election, but it's not the fault of the incompetent election officials in Miami-Dade. No, it's the fault of the government--of course, meaning George Bush.

McAuliffe was claiming that 1,000's of lawyers are going to be all over FL Nov. 5 assuring that the election goes smoothly. Having police all over as well is probably not something he had in mind.

''I hope they won't have uniform officers at the polls or other things that will be intimidating to voters,'' especially minorities, said Rashad Robinson, director of the Washington-based Center for Voting and Democracy.

Why is a uniformed officer intimidating to a voter?
