Jerash man allegedly confesses to burning 6 family members in home

By Rana Husseini and Atef Itmeh

AMMAN — A 40-year-old man allegedly confessed on Thursday to burning his home and the resultant deaths of his wife and five children in Jerash last week for he is reported to have called family honour reasons, said official sources.

The suspect confessed willingly to the crimes on Thursday morning reenacting his actions later in the day, an official source told The Jordan Times and Al Rai newspapers.

“The suspect told interrogators he killed his wife and children after being informed by someone in his village three days previous that his children were illegitimate and that his wife was a woman of ill repute,” the source said.

He told police the allegation made him angry so he decided to kill his entire family by setting his home on fire, the source explained.

On Oct. 6, the suspect allegedly poured a flammable material over his house and set it ablaze “locking the doors so that his family could not flee and taking only his three-year-old twin daughter when he left the house to report the fire,” the source said.

The victims included his wife Khadijeh, 38, and his children Hussam, 11, Rasha, 9, Abdullah, 7, Saleh, 4, and Rania, 3.

When fire fighters arrived on the scene at around 3:30 am they found the blaze in its final stages and extinguished it. They found the doors to the staircase locked. After breaking it open they found the family unconscious on the ground. Fire officials determined the blaze was set intentionally “by someone with the intent of inflicting harm on the family.”

Coroners established that the family died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The crime raises to 17 victims — in 12 murders — the total number of people killed in the Kingdom in “honour crimes” since the beginning of the year.

In an unrelated development, police announced the arrest of an Arab national who on Thursday reportedly confessed to murdering his former employer in Sahab over an old dispute.

The suspect, unidentified by officials, told police he had a fight almost three years ago with his employer, Hassan Issa, 60, over financial matters, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

Officials said on Sept. 18 the suspect headed to the victim's farm “fully determined to exact revenge, particularly after Issa, a chicken farm owner, refused to employ his brother, kicking him off the farm,” the source said.

The suspect was quoted by officials as saying he monitored the victim for a while, fought with him, then shot him in the chest and fled the scene.

Police said intense investigations and the questioning of many people led them to believe the suspect had fought with the victim in the past while working at his farm for a two-month period, according to official sources.

Upon searching his house, the source added, police found a handgun and six live rounds, adding that a criminal lab report indicated the bullet that killed Issa came from the suspect's gun.

The suspect was referred to the Criminal Court for further questioning, the source added.

I thought the rule of thumb was 1 murder = 1 victim - how do 12 murders cause 17 victims?

Hence the "Hold Muh Quran" alert. He could have heard it from his jealous girlfriend, pictured above. If that kind of rumor was spread, would they require four witnesses?

He's probably planning on selling the three-year-old when she reaches puberty.

Dear American friends of the intifadah,

Some days ago, while looking through the effects of my martyred husband Abdullard, I found this photograph. Though I would not think evil of him, what can it mean?

The faithful widow of Abdullard (how I long for his caresses!),

Fatima the Goat.
